Continuation of the scene Take on Me'

Geet did not say anything when Maan looked at her. She just kept on staring at Daadi unstaringly. She was focused inwards. What if you knew Daadima, that I am an unwed mother to be? What if I told you I was almost killed by my own family if not for your grandson? What if I told you there is a man somewhere who "married" me for my money and left me after one night, leaving me to carry his child and burden of the society as being a defiled woman. What if, she stopped the merry go round her mind was playing and looked at Daadima, will you really want to give your favorite's grandson's hand in mine? Daadima, it is really nice of you to think I can bring him happiness but I don't think so, I will only bring shame to him. She saw Daadi take some deep breath and she looked tired and had slowly closed her eyes.

She slipped her hand out of Maan's, who was still holding it inspite of Daadima having fallen asleep and took Daadi hand and placed it on the side to give her the comfort in her sleep. She turned and walked out to the corridor on lead feet and bowed head, and would have continued down the stairs if she had not felt Maan's hand on her shoulder. She turned slowly as if a burden was holding her back and her movements restricted because of it. She had empty eyes, Maan noticed, as if she had just lost everything. He wanted to gather her in his arms, but she seemed to holding herself rigid as if waiting for some onslaught of a talwaar on her.

He was transported back to the night he had saved her. Hell, if truth be told she had saved him from a life of bitterness, a life of misplaced anger. He had gone about his life as if one incident had been the reason to give up on his life, his life, which after all had been there to save Geet's. She had become his reason for being; stealthily crept into his thoughts, without him being aware. Now Daadima was forcing his hand in marriage, but was his yes just in subjugation to Daadima's plea or did he say yes because he wanted to.

He looked at Geet and said, "I have said yes, inside Geet but you know I am not going to hold you to it, I just want Daadima to get well. Then I shall tell her that we don't want to marry each other." He saw pain flicker in her eyes and then they became blank again. Geet said, "Meine to kuch bhi nahi kaha Maan, mujhe aapse shaadi nahi karni. Mujhe kisise shaadi nahi karni." She again turned away to walk from him, somehow, knowing that he had just said yes for Daadi, irked. Why should it irk? She did not want to marry him right? So why she should feel bad, if it was just for Daadi's peace of mind, he had said a lie. But then I am lying to aren't I? I don't know if I can marry him but I want him in my life, I want to wake up every morning and be secure in this thought that Maan was with her, forever.

Maan had closed his eyes hearing her. He was trying to shut his eyes from revealing the truth he had not said. He never lied and hated lies but why had he lied just now, yes Daadi had been the primary reason, but his feelings for Geet were such that he only agreed to the plan Daadi had deviced because he wanted to in his hearts of heart, he wanted to. How does one tell, that the girl he had once shoved away in his reluctance to help her in her plight was the same girl who had taken all his thoughts, all his waking moments were spent being mesmerized by her and his dreams were filled with him loving her all night long. He particularly remembered one dream.

He brokenly uttered, "Geet! Wait we have to think of something. Daadima is very stubborn. She will want us married tomorrow. We need to talk, how we are going to solve this."

Geet turned once more and looked with puzzled eyes, "What can we do? You tell her that is not possible and that will be the end."

Maan's anger rose suddenly, "What, and push her to an early death? Stop being selfish for once Geet and support me. Daadima is everything to me. Without her all this is meaningless. I will never forgive you if I lose Daadima. No there has to be a way. A way to make her feel secured that we will marry and once she is back to health, I will tell her that we are not going to."

Geet saw his agitation and covered his hand with hers. "I am sorry, but if we both don't want to marry each other, how can we make her think we are going to marry tomorrow? I don't understand."

Maan said, "Lets go have a coffee and we can think of a plan." And both went towards the caf after informing their whereabouts to the nurse who was stationed in Daadi's room.
