Movies That Cater To NRIs...

There has been a barrage of recent movies in the past decade, which have tried to cater to the NRI audience.
More often than not, these movies consist of things like a hatke issue, western-styled music, stylish clothing, and lots of white back-up dancers.

I know my post already has managed to develop a negative tinge >.< but that is only because I am an NRI, and when I see movies that try so desperately to cater to an Indian who doesn't live in India, it makes me, strictly IMO, feel very embarrassed. Yes, I am an NRI, so yeah, I have seen some things, heard of issues that aren't much popular in India, or that's what I guess.

I watch Bolly movies because I like feeling reconnected to my own country. I like watching the actors, the stereotypical Bollywood aspects, the surprising aspects which aren't stereotypical. As an NRI, I don't need to watch extra-marital affairs or an excessively exercised lust trip to be entertained, and to be reminded of "how my country is maturing."
To me, movies that have such an agenda embarrass me. Again, STRICTLY my opinion.
I wanted to know some of your views, because I know there are tons of NRIs in this forum. And I wanted to know the views of non-NRIs as well.... what do you guys think about such movies?

NOTE: Before anyone suggests or insinuates, I have been a KJO fan for my life. But yes, some of his movies embarrass me, but again, I AM NOT TRYING TO BASH HIM via this post.

Hey
I am a NRI as well and i was talking to my family yesterday about this exact thing as well..saying i have lost interest in movies now because they are so rubbish lately apart from a handfull. I agree NRI i have spoken to dislike this change to as well i think the general feeling is we watch them for the indianness if we wanted skimppy close and western stories then we would watch hollywood who do it better anyways. Only ones i actually thought were good or want to see were, I Hate Luv Stories, 3 Idiots, Housefull( Not a massive indian Comedy Fan but saw Hey baby which was good so wanna see this)..veer and saadiyaan were okay...mean it really needs to go back to proper magic bollywood, even the stars today lack that magic could be the movies but still..
So glad to see this topic been on my mind for a while, as for KJO since KAL HO NA HO for me his movies have lost the magic they are okay stories but no magic.

waise I never looked at Housefull as an NRI-caterer but now that I think about it... it did feel a little agenda-ish.

Thank youu, i completley agree with you. I've been an NRI too for most of my life, and watching films like "RACE" really made me feel like bollywood was perhaps learning less than more in terms of what they can achieve. We have so much talent, and i think the best of our movies are when we make story lines that are our own, without trying too hard to imitate a western movie or build itself to be watched by a western audience.
Even if BW doesnt just want to make just masala films, theres great examples of bollywood films that are modern but also unique to India, ie: Oye Lucky Lucky Oye = modern, sophisticated, indian, and stylishly made.

I agree...I've visited India only four times in my life and for the past 23 years i've been living in the states I've always looked to bolly movies to learn about my culture..to be honest KJOs movies always facinated me..ermm--momentairly then i step back for a second and realize what nonsense iv'e seen rofl..
Kjo did wonders w/ KKHH...why can't we see more simplemovies liek that? that dont target the NRIs ..the NRI ppl like movies that remind them of their country not to see their own ppl ridiculing themselves on trying to be american or whatever...
like really, saying 'cool, yo, whatsup' doenst certify you as an NRI.. so its abit annoying on my side...

don't think there is anything wrong with such movies... they actually do well overseas, don't they...? 😛 so there is something that does click with the audience here...
let's take... kabhi alvida na kehna... i think that was hinted in the starting topic... i thought it was an okay movie... i like parts of it, but overall, it's a so-so movie... if i remember, it was actually a hit overseas, but did not do well in India... i think that's because a lot of these things (infidelity etc.) happen on a much common scale here... not saying, that cheating husbands and wives don't exist in India, but it's considered a taboo there.. over here, it's pretty normal... you fall in love, marry them, and you fall out of love.. ETA: when i say taboo, all i mean, people don't go on and on about it, like in our society... 😳
if you see some of the people here, they actually behave quite in the same way... saying words that they don't even comprehend the meaning of, because it is cool...
i think that there is a lot more audience for hindi movies in current times... and the fact that bollywood is coming up with so many different movies is good... we have movies for everyone... as they say, variety is the spice of life... 😉
interesting topic, btw...! 😊
