does a music director has right ?or the producer of the movie?or is it both/mutual?to select the singer for their song.
becoz when aasha ji came to indian idol she mentioned how rdburman saab imagined the song to be and how spbalu brought different variations ?and she tend to like the rd version better.

so was it not in rdburman saab hands to choose the singer?or how he wants them to sing?why it couldnt be in the way he imagined?😕

I think it can vary. Most of the time I think the directors/producers leave it to the music director but sometimes I think the producer/director insists on using a certain guy and the music director has to go with it. For example, if a particular singer is very popular at the time, the producer may want him to sing the song so that it will be a hit.

Another thing is that I think there is always a tussle between the music director's vision for a song and the singer's vision. A.R.Rahman once mentioned that Sukhwinder Singh tends towards flamboyance and Rahman generally doesn't mind but with Jai Ho he was very insistent on how the song should be sung. So I guess it's hard for a music director to tell a reputed singer such as SPB to change his vision of the song.

This was exactly the reason why Nihira's song in SEI was not chosen and was edited out...😭😭 Such a beautiful song 😕
Has happened to her and other singer that I know of couple of times...So when the singer is asked to sing and song is recorded there is no guaratee that his-her version will be in finale movie release...MDs and producers have couple of singers (Case especially with new budding singers) sing it to have their pick...😳

This happened to Debojit Saha as well, or so I have heard. He originally sang the song Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh. But in the end, the song that was taken into 3 idiots was sung by Shaan. I guess this happens all the time in the industry and that is why we have to hear the same old voices over and over again. But, i have to be fair and mention that new singers are getting a chance these days, and it is refreshing to hear a voice you have never heard before. So I hope this new change will continue and i hope the industry accepts more outsiders and gives them a chance, which can make their life. And i hope this very industry reaches out to sreeram very soon as well. lol. god bless you sreeram! and bhagvan kare tu Indian Idol bane, sirf Sony ka nahi, Hindustan ka!

Well, the music director has all the rights to choose a particular singer for his song. He may consult the producer, that is of course his own choice if he wants to consult him or not.
R. D. Burman may have liked the second version of the song more and that is why he may have chosen that one. I think that Asha ji was just giving out her opinion that which version of the song she liked between the two.
