Chapter 32
Abs signaled Maan for a private tete-a-tete but Daadi, before Maan could say anything, said to Abolee and Nargis, I would like you two to come with me. Maan and Vicky aap please give us some time. She then directed the girls to her room. Both Abs and Nargis were speechless and Abolee especially wanted to talk to Maan so badly that she was not sure she wanted to go with daadi. Nargis did not know what to do but went along with daadi after giving a quick look to Vicky.
Once in daadi's room, that was large yet very simply decorated with a huge four poster bed a chaise lounge, two arm chairs and coffee table, a dresser and a writing table with chair presumably where daadi did her correspondence from there were two sets of doors adjacen to each other on side of the room that probably led to her dressing room and bathroom. The colors were neutral beige predominantly and subdued gold that accentuated the dcor with cushions, the tie rope of heavy curtains and valance. The four poster bed had canopy of beige and with gold lace to it. It was like being transported into Victorian era yet the modern features were reflected in the lighting.
Daadima walked into the dressing room which housed her collection of clothes and jewelry and used her the key off the key ring she had discreetly tucked in her saree to open one of the safes and brought out two boxes and went back into the bedroom where both the girls were nervously standing and talking in signs. Daadima said, beitho aap dono, then opened the boxes once they all settled on the chaise lounge. She gave one to Abolee and one to Nargis. These are family heirlooms, part of what will come to you both, but I wanted to give you these now for making such lovely dishes and as a welcome to the family. The boxes had nestled in them, a pair of solitaire diamond stud earrings. Daadima handed the boxes to both the girls. The girls were stunned and almost refused but did not say anything and accepted when daadi said, it will make me very happy and I am sure if Poonam were here right now she would have been extremely happy to meet her two bahus.
The solitaires were .74 carat each and winked at them in the light coming in through the window. The afternoon sun rays found the cut of diamond and mazed through its facets. Daadi then hugged both the girls and said Jao, woh dono neeche, left right kar rahe honge, wondering what the devil daadi has done their girls.
The girls look their respective boxes, touched daadi feet and straightened to leave the room. Daadi told them she will be down in an hour and half and if that was not too early in Canada to call, she asked Abs. Abs looked at her watch almost 3pm, it will be 4:30pm when daadi comes down and that will be alright cause her family was an early riser anyway and nodded her assent. It will be 7:00 am being summer. That also gave her time to have that talk with Maan before the call. They then left the room and headed back to the Study.
True to daadi's words, both Vicky and Maan had been pacing the floor when they entered and both asked in unison, what happened? Looking at the boxes in their hands, they gave as sigh and smiled at each other. Both the girls walked up silently to them and gave the box for inspection. Maan and Vicky opened the boxes and smiled. Maan said, these were given by dadaji to daadi and mom. This was a Diwali gift just before the incident and is representative of the happy times in our lives. Daadi giving you these would mean that she now believes that happy times will be back in this house and you two are responsible for the forthcoming happy times. He then hugs Abolee, who returns it not to show her inner turmoil that still continued. Vicky and Nargis exchange a look that meant they needed to get out of here.
Vicky told Abs and Maan, bhai, bhabhi, we will take your leave; daadi will rest for a while so I will get back to office after dropping Nargis to hers. Maan and Abs agreed as they had to be here for the call to Canada. Vicky offered help if required for the call but Abolee said they will manage for now and if need be they will call. She needed to talk to Maan alone.
Once Vicky and Nargis had left, Maan asked Abolee, you want to talk right, let's go to my room, no one will disturb us there. Abolee was a little taken aback. Maan knew how she felt? Once in Maan's room, this was the first time that Abs had gone to his room. It was a stately room similar in size to daadima's but total different dcor. This room was totally modern. A California king size bed, with white cotton sheets covered with a bed spread in deep blue and geometric designs in different shades of blue. The walls were pearl white with pictures of Maan's college days hanging on one wall above a desser that had some trophies on it and a football. There were modern paintings of artists she did not recognize but they looked good. He had a desk that held his nick knacks like a writing pad, a laptop, an ipod and some keys, a pen stand, a mobile charger and some loose coins. He had a a love seat and an overstuffed recliner that faced the LCD TV that was hooked up on the wall opposite to the bed. She wondered, if Maan watched TV really. She was not into television and preferred to read books. Maan saw her look at the TV and said, I need to see news first thing in the morning and going to the lounge, was not always practical. Abolee said, oh its okay I guess. She did not know why one needed a TV in the bedroom but she guessed, it's a matter of habit. They had passed the said lounge once upstairs and taken the direction opposite to daadima's which was on the west of the stairs and they had come to a huge lounge that had easy couch and recliners in front of a huge television and other media gadgets like music system and off it were two rooms, one was Vicky's and the other Maan's. Maan had told that both brothers had fun watching movies and listening to music there on the days when they were younger and used to spend lot of time there on lazy Sunday afternoons. There was a fridge stuffed with drinks and water and lots of snacks in a small cabinets under the bar in the far corner. This was the area where boys were boys and did everything themselves rather than be pandered by servants.
Abolee went and sat on the loveseat and maan came and joined her after asking if she wanted to drink something from the fridge that was there in the lounge. Abolee said no, and Maan said I know exactly what is going through your mind and I did not want to create a scene in front of Vicky and Nargis and yes I am going to have a word with Daadiji about what she has said.
Firstly, I don't think you need to learn Punjabi, daadi I am sure was joking, she does have a wry sense of humour. You don't have to do anything you don't want to Abolee, I am not wanting you to change at all, I love you the way you are and no language learning or not learning is going to change that.
Second, I don't know your father much, but I am sure he wants to do everything he can to get his daughter's wedding organized the best he can and I will support him on that. No, he does not need to stay anywhere other than at your apartment. I don't know how many people are going to be there but if and when we want to meet, I have no issues meeting you in front of your family or mine. I am marrying you, not having a clandestine affair. Abolee I saw every expression on your face, but kept quiet because she is an elder of the family, it does not mean I agree with her ideas. Some are archaic and yes she does take the family prestige issue a little too far sometimes, it is a fall out after what happened with Maa and Paa, she was a liberal, she changed after Pa's defection as she sees it.
Third, the most important, don't ever let anyone bully you into subservience. Not even me. I am a man after all I might get a bit heavy handed sometime, even perfection can be improved, he winked to make the mood light, but sobered when Abolee didn't respond and said, be your own self Abolee, that is why I like about you, your spunk, your individuality, your efficiency, that is what draws me to you. The way you want to keep the distance before wedding, you may not know how endearing I find that, he held Abolee's face in both his hands, looked deeply into her eyes and said, Abolee, I love you, YOU! not someone who will be daadi's choice, or ma's or pa's or whoevers, I want you! Always remember that.
Abolee's anger, frustration melted, but she wanted to say something. I want you to talk to daadi ma now, tell her that my father will take care of everything related to wedding, we may be rich like you we are working people, but Papa has his dreams for his only daughter and we have many relatives who have done a lot about the arrangements here already. We need to discuss all that, I agree Pa and daadiji need to talk and yes they are coming this weekend, its their daughter getting married finally, even I want my father to take care of everything. I am proud of who I am and who my father is. Daadiji hurt me today. I am not sure why she said that, can I really trust her not to say the wrong thing to my father? If she hurts my father, he may just call off the wedding and I love you but, they are my family, they have given me life, they have supported me in every decision I have taken. It was not easy to convince them about you but my father understood that I love you and I choose you. He respects that. I hope dadiji does that with my father, respects his wishes.
Maan understood the underlying emotion in each word Abolee spoke, he pulled her to him and hugged her and said, I shall set everything right. I will talk to daadi before we make the call to your parents.
Maan she said, pulling back a bit though she did stay in his arms, just wanted to see his face when she said her piece, I know what you are saying but you hurt me too. I expected you to say at least something when daadiji said about organizing wedding and all. I need to know that you are going to support me and my feelings about such things, I understand she is an elder and I respect her and that is why I kept quiet but I need to know you will be right next to me. I felt lost there, I did not know what to do, the lunch had its highlights, but daadi did ruin it for me. Meri kya galati thi? Mein to yahi sochti rah gayee..what is happening?
Maan, rubbed her back in understanding and said, Shh! Cherie! I know, I have been wanting to take you out that room to tell you all this for the longest time, then again put his hands cupping her face and said, everything will be alright, I will make it alright, trust me. He then rained kisses on her face and cheeks as if to kiss away the unshed tears that Abs had checked in the Study. He did not know he could feel anyone's pain the way did Abolee and he conveyed that with soft endearments and kisses.
Abolee, then hugged him tight and kissed him forgiving his non participation in what had transpired in the Study but she knew it will remain in her memory.
