Bollywood Remakes of Old Films

Yeah, everyone says that the general rule is not to remake old films. But, there have been good and bad examples of that. One good example is Don. The new film was nothing legendary, but still did good business and Shahrukh was ok in it. On the other hand, Umrao Jaan with Aish was one remake that went horribly wrong. J.P. Dutta did a great job trying to retell the story, but it lacked commercial value. The movie had good acting and nice songs, but the audience felt Rekha could not be imitated. This was very unfair to Aish. However, it has been proven that remakes can also mean the end of a career. J.P. Dutta has not made a film in 4 years since Umrao Jaan because of the criticism and huge backlash against him.
Anyway, now there is news that Karan Johar wants to remake Agneepath with Hritik. Do you think Bollywood should keep doing remakes of old films? 🐷

Personally, I think remakes SHOULD be left alone. Though I love SRK his Don was a big time bore. Rather than acting there was more technology which wasn't needed. Umrao Jaan should never have been touched, Ash sucked big time as well as the script itself, there was nothing real about the film, I remember being 15 and bawling when I watched the original, Rekha was magical!
Other examples being Sholay, really what was RGV thinking. Somethings are better left untouched. Imagine remaking DDLJ 20 years from now, it won't be the same because it won't have the old world charm and no SRK-Kajol chemistry. I think even Sanjay's attempt at Devdas was bad, I have seen Dilip Kumar's version it's so beautiful and simple, SLB's version was just ostentatious and made my eyes hurt.

I bet if SLB directed Umrao Jaan, it would have been so much better! 🤪

Sure. It would have been nothing but opulence, opulence and more opulence🤢 But, the point is you need a strong script and a person who can actually act to bring justice to such a powerful role. Rekha can not be matched when it comes to Umrao Jaan. The music is another factor, I don't know a single song from the new Umrao🤔, where as I love the songs from the old.

Well,

If producers want to remake old films, they outta use the right script and cast. Otherwise, just leave them alone! 🤢

I hate remakes because most of the time, justice is not done to the original. Plus I don't think classics should be touched IMO. It's better to come up with something fresh.

Devdas with Dilip Kumar was itself a remake. There was one with KL Saigal made in 1930s. You made a valid point. The script should be right and maybe a bit modifed to meet the newer audience's taste. The cast is vital, you really good actors to make it work.

I quite liked the way Farhan had handled Don in modifying the script a bit but much as I like SRK he came no where close to original Don - Mr B. I'll add here that SRK was probably the best we have in this generation who could take on that role.

If the directors want to go for remake of old stories... then they should go for the average rated movies.. not the hit movies.. b/c with hit movie remake people have lot of expectations and compare new with old (which is very normal)... and as people has seen the best ... they want no less than that...
but their are some good eg of hit movies remakes
Nadiya ke paar - new is hum aapke hai kaun
chori chori (raj kapoor & nargis) - new is Dil hai ki Manta Nahi (Aamir & Pooja Bhatt)
Old Devdas - New Devdas
Old Bhagat Singh - New Bhagat Singh (Ajay Devgan)
