i post here only the piece abt pratigya........
There is more offensive stuff on the so called 'woman-centric' soaps across channels where women are being slapped (Pratigya on Star Plus), chained to a bed like an animal (Agale Janam Mujhe Bitiya Hi Kijo on Zee), forced to perform sati (Kesariya Balam Aavo Hamare Des), humiliated by inlaws (Pavitra Rishta on Zee) or being pressured to either have babies or abort them. The popularity of these serials makes me wonder if we as a culture perversely like to see women in subservient roles but I do get their hooklines. The conflicts between generations, sexes, families, friends turned foes keep mounting, dissolving and evolving, the dialogue is catchy, the performances especially in Pratigya are so powerful and over the top that they actually keep you entertained. And they satisfy the voyeurs in us because we feel we are peeping into the drawing rooms and bedrooms of neighbours we were always curious about. Asking for subtlety in these shows is like asking for caviar in a dhaba.
