REGRESSING BACKWARDS

Pratigya started as a story that addressed the issue of eve-teasing and culminated in marriage between the show's protagonist and her chief troubleshooter, Krishna. But soon the protagonist Pratigya is humiliated at her in-law's house. Incidentally, it is one of the most popular shows. However, Pratigya is not the only show where women are at a receiving end. Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, Bhagyavidhaata, Laado, Sajan Ghar Jana Hai and Balika Vadhu are the other popular shows where women are subjected to verbal and emotional abuse.

When TV programming moved from the K soaps to issue-based shows, it was supposed to be a goodbye to the long era of regression. But, there is no relief from socially backward behaviour and ill treatment of women. In fact, the current shows thrive on these very elements for ratings while the issues they are supposed to deal with are put on the backburner.

Star India's senior creative head Vivek Behl denies that Pratigya has diverted from the main issue it kicked off with. "We don't believe in raking up an issue to sell a show, and then conveniently forgetting about it. In a larger context, Pratigya is battling for respect for women, and against uneducated, misdirected mindset that treats women badly," he defends.

Sumeet Mittal, writer-producer-director of Sajan Ghar Jana Hai, is of the view that fiction is a glamorised reflection of reality. "Like in real life, there are good and bad people in serials too. The only difference is that in serials the fight between good and bad is one against four because the audience sympathises with the protagonist when he or she is cornered," he explains. "The audience always expects the protagonist to fight from a helpless and vulnerable situation, " he adds. If there is disrespect towards women and they are treated badly in some of the shows, the social reality is not much different, feels senior TV programmer-turned-producer Nilanjana P. "Domestic abuse at the hands of the husband or in-laws is widely prevalent. The male ego rules all over and TV serials show just a fraction of it. The reality is much worse," she adds.

Be it Pratigya or other shows, the reason why viewers watch them in huge numbers is that the characters are interesting, issues seem real, and connect with people, feels Vivek. "Characters aren't black and white but have degrees of grey," he adds.
