The Witty Nirbhay

Nirbhay is the stud in real life. Having walked the ramp for as many as 116 shows, he is an absolute heartthrob and a hit with the girls. He has even played the lead in the Telugu film, Aadab Hyderabad. A charmer in true sense, Nirbhay has a way with words too. He comes up with peppy Hindi one-liners on Miley Jab Hum Tum and impresses all and sundry around him and in real life too, he plays around with words. Nirbhay is an intellectual, Meer Ali on the same lines is a poet and lyricist, and loves to pen down his thoughts.

He feels fortunate to have become a part of the renowned Excel College and bears a carefree attitude. Never one to bother about others, Nirbhay does what his heart says he ought to.

Here, he talks about the show, getting along with the old batch and his college days...

According to you, what's the USP of MJHT?

The USP of the show primarily is that it's a youth-based show. It is fun and exciting to shoot for MJHT as it has given me an opportunity to go back to my teens on screen. It not just happens with the actors but even the viewers get a chance to relive their college days as they relate to the cast of the show. STAR One has been focusing on youth based shows but MJHT is different from others because of its peppy subject and it has a different spice to it. It deals with ragging and petty feuds that you have with your collegians.

How does it feel to be a part of MJHT?

For any actor this can be a dream debut as you can't get to play a younger character than this. I might play a husband in other shows that will come my way in the future but I don't think I would get to play a college student again. This is my debut show on television and I consider it as my big break.

How did you break the ice with Gunjan, Samrat and Mayank on the show?

There was an air of uneasiness in the initial days of the shoot as we didn't know each other and there was no communication at all. The trio of Gunjan, Samrat and Mayank is already established and is friendly with each other. But I took it on me to break the ice with them. I went up to them and introduced myself to all of them. I always do the job of breaking the ice as it helps you to work better because then there is no discomfort between the cast of the show. Off-screen camaraderie helps you to portrait your character with ease on camera.

How is it working with the senior heartthrobs Samrat and Mayank?

Oh! It is great working with them. You know the freshers can't be compared with the senior batch and it's futile to even think that we can compete with them. They have harvested MJHT and are the roots of the show. They are like these semi-Gods and the new batch is just trying to be humans – very good human beings. I am getting a lot of feedback where the viewers are comparing us with the likes of Gunjan, Samrat and Mayank and all I can say is that there can be no comparison as they are way above us.

Does the feedback bother you?

Not at all. I am not deterred as I am hoping that the viewers will develop a liking for the new batch at Excel College and soon start differentiating between the alumni and the new batch.

The freshers have become friends and you are an arch rival to Rohan on-screen. How does your off-screen camaraderie help you portrait animosity on-screen?

I had befriended Rohan even before we started shooting for the show. I met him during the audition rounds and somehow had a feeling that the two of us will be finalised. We come together on the sets and share the green room. He is a great pal and I think our rapport off-screen really helps us on-screen as we share a comfort level with each other.

Tell us a bit about the boxing match that aired recently?

That was the most amazing sequence I had ever done. We actually shot for 10 hours for the sequence that was to be aired for only a couple of minutes. We were fighting for real and interestingly the two of us developed a technique wherein, when I was boxing him, he blocked my punch and vice-versa. We wanted to give our best to that particular sequence as we are aware of the audiences' ever-rising expectations from the show. We got hurt in the process but nothing matters when compared to pleasing the viewers.

Did you undergo any kind of training for the same?

No, we didn't undergo any sort of training for this.

Have you had any fights or disagreements during your college days?

Yes, I have had my share of fights and quarrels like any other college going guy during my college days but I hadn't got involved into a boxing match (laughs). This was a unique experience for me.

You are trying to run Riya down on the show. Can we see sparks fly between you two in the near future?

As of now, there is no possibility of love blossoming between us but I can't say about the near future. Why just Riya? You might see something happen between Nirbhay and another girl.

How is Nirbhay in real life? Are you as tough and strong as him?

The only difference is that I talk a lot in real life where as Nirbhay on the show doesn't talk much. He impresses others with his one-liners and Meer Ali involves in fun and masti. Meer is a charmer and Nirbhay cares two hoots about others.

What kind of grooming did you go through to portrait Nirbhay?

Nirbhay talks less but comes across as a very intelligent, clever and witty guy. He has a way with words and pokes fun at others. He hails from a small town, Moradabad. I worked on my speech and tried to control it and carried a little serious look as the character demanded it. The four of us also did a workshop to prepare ourselves for the character.

How were you during your college days? Were you a prankster and a stud?

I was a mamma's boy during my college days and was an average student. I was a back-bencher and always was the follower in the group. But things changed for good and now I lead. I was an athlete during my college.

How fun is it to relive your past on the show?

It's an absolute pleasure to have got an opportunity to relive my college days. Whenever I am shooting, I am reminded of my college and this enchants me a lot. You aren't mature during your college but here I have grown as a person and have matured in life and playing a college going student.

What was the best thing that you did during your college days?

The best thing that happened to me was the party they keep for freshers. During those days, I was like this super-lean guy who looked intimidated all the time. The girls from the senior batch approached me and forcibly wrote my name for the contest of Mr. College. To my surprise, I ended up winning the coveted title and it can be termed as the turning point of my life. I cherish those days.

How different and fun is Excel College from other colleges?

The best part of being a student at Excel College is that you can do a lot of things that are not allowed in other colleges. For example, the boxing match which took place between Rohan and me and wooing girls. Here you can do all that you missed out on during your college days.

What are your hobbies apart from acting?

I am a lyricist and try to pen down the beauty of Mother Nature. I write in both English and Hindi. I will use them when I am able enough to launch a music album. I am also a gifted singer. My father is a trained singer and I get the knowledge of music from him.

So why didn't you try your luck in film industry?

Bollywood will happen gradually and that remains to be my final destination. It's not easy to establish a foothold in the film industry as it is dominated by the star sons and those who have Godfathers. I know I am being slow but I am steady too.

What can be looked forward to from the MJHT season two?

In a nutshell, LOT OF FUN!

In the current track, Samrat's life will turn topsy-turvy after Gunjan tells him that her love ended for him post Nupur's death. Samrat is left speechless hearing this and doesn't know what turn to take in life. Rohan and Nirbhay are involved in a boxing match and Nirbhay is trying his best to defeat Rohan in the rung to give a befitting reply to Riya.

Don't forget to tune in to Miley Jab Hum Tum, Monday to Friday at 9pm only on STAR One.
