Wanted: Serials for the youth!

Soaps, weekend special serials, films, reality shows and lots more. Channels are competing with each other like never before.

But amidst all the smiles and tears (we mean the saas, bahu, beti soaps), there's hardly anything for the young viewer. Gone are the days when Hip Hip Hurray, Sunn Yaar Chill Maar, Dil Se Dosti and many other shows had a huge fan following among youngsters.

Actor Arjun Bijlani, who is part of Miley Jab Hum Tum, one of the very few youth-based serials, says, "Shows for youngsters are limited because there are not many takers for these programmes. And family- oriented soaps are getting high TRPs. So at the end of the day it is all about business. Being a youngster myself, I prefer watching shows like Friends, music-based reality shows, films et al and not family oriented soaps." On the other hand, actor Rajiv Paul has a different take on this. "There are a couple of channels catering to young audiences between the age group of 18-25 years. So if the GECs do not produce youth-based shows, I think it's fine." There are mixed reactions from actors in the telly industry. While some feel there's a dearth of such shows, others say reality shows do cater to the needs of the young viewers.

Nikhil Gandhi, programming head of a channel focusing on the age group between 18 and 25 years, says, "GECs are catering to women and family audiences. They are also focusing on rural areas and small towns. They don't produce soaps for youngsters because it will not click with them. As per the TRP studies, youngsters are fond of reality shows and that speaks about their popularity."

It's all about TRPs after all. Producer Amrit Sagar says, "The youngsters in metros prefer watching globally recognised shows and channels. There are a couple of shows that are targeted for rural and small town girls and guys who dream of making it big in cities. That apart, various formats of reality shows strike a chord with youngsters."

Ask Niyati Shah, a collegian about her TV viewing habits and she says, "There was a time when the daily soaps were good, but now they have become boring and repetitive. I only like to watch new reality shows like Fear Factor, Roadies, Lovenet and Emotional Atyachaar. These are the only shows that make some sense to me and I love discussing them with my friends."

Okie I just came across this post randomly...and when I saw, i was like wowwww!! I was interviewed! 😆 Except I wasn't, but my namesake was! 😆

Neways talking about youth interested shows...I am a 17 year old girl, and I dont mind seeing family shows if they have good and apt. concept that I can relate to and sadly there are no shows these days that are much into concepts and storyline...all they want to portray is Rom-yawnce...be it any youth show or family show! That is something I can't handle everytime!

We need more shows that has story, concept, message behind it and that can as well entertain us...and in present day, I can just name three: Sasural Ghenda Phool (which mind you is a family show...but I love watching it), Rishta.com, and Mahi Way!

What repels us youth is OTT-ness and the stories that we cannot relate to (like DMG, MJHT...I cannot relate to their stories...not anymore!) And the reason reality shows are at peak for youth is because even though it might be scripted, there is a underlying connection that we can feel towards it...for example roadies...whatever the show may be, I can connect to the roadies because they have this dream and desire to do something in life...they have this passion that I can relate to! Dance India Dance...why? Because of dance that I can relate to!!

Sasural Ghenda Phool...that is one of those least family shows that are really beautiful that makes me fall in love with it in each and every episode! I cry, I laugh, I feel those characters...why? Because I can relate to them...I can connect to them!

So I dont know what they want to say that we youth would only prefer watching youth shows or reality...that might be true...but they never nailed down to the reasons for our choice...and when shows like SGP comes (which is not targeted to youth), even then so it attracts us because the show has good concept...meaningful and we are able to relate to it! The show actually beautifully portrays that how there is happiness present in each moment of sadness...and it is because we are soo much involved in sadness, we fail to acknowledge the happiness and laughter around us!

I think they found the correct data but now they really need to analyze this data and figure out why we don't watch those family shows...because the fact remains that most of them...actually none of them (with except of SGP) has a good concept and storyline to attach us that deeply like we are attached to shows like Hip Hip Hurray, Banegi Apni Baat, Remix, R.com, Mahi Way, Sasural Ghenda Phool! These shows are loved because of their concept and storyline that just doesn't reflect love stories...but reflects ups and downs of life, and all other relationships in one's life!😳😳

Thus, I dont care if there are youth shows or family shows as long as I get a good show that has a good concept and storyline...and ofcourse amazing characters with whom I can relate to!
