Sarrkkar to go off air

A political drama can't drag on endlessly like other soaps, says producer Manish Goswami

End of the road: A still from Sarrkkar

The Roy brothers' popular serial, Sarrkkar is going off air. The last episode of the serial will be aired on Zee TV on April 21. "The serial was launched on April 25, 2005, so it's ending exactly after a year," says producer Manish Goswami. "Yes, we are going off air. Since this is a political drama, it cannot possibly extend forever and drag on meaninglessly like other family soaps. It will have a definite ending. I would rather that people wondered why the serial ended, than wondering when it will end." & nbsp;

When contacted, however, the channel had another angle on the issue. Zee's programming head, Ashwini Yardi, says, "These two shows (Sarrkkar and Rabba Ishq Na Hove) have not been doing as well as our other shows. We have not taken a decision yet on whether we will shift these shows to another time slot or pull them off air altogether."

"Right now we're concentrating on Saat Phere and Kasamh Se," she adds. "We are thinking of introducing new tracks in these two serials. We should be able to take a decision in a week's time."

As far as the lead characters are concerned, the Roy brothers too hold opposing views on the fate of Sarrkkar. Rohit Roy who plays the central character Karan on Sarrkkar, says, "I hope it continues, because I love the show. It isn't a typical saas-bahu saga. I like acting in it." Ronit Roy, on the other hand, must be relieved. So far he has been desperately trying to manage three daily soaps and a family. Meanwhile, Goswami is upbeat about his two news shows that will be launched soon - Sixxerr on Star One and Aisa Des Hai Mera on Sony. Sixxerr is a cricket-based fiction serial, while Aisa Des Hai Mera is a love story of two generations, starring Kanwaljit.
