I don't understand this. When there is absolutely no shortage of pretty faces in Hollywood, it's unlikely that an Indian girl with a questionable accent (and before people can pounce on me about her sounding 'Indian'... I am Indian, studied in the same school as Deepika, and I do not sound like her. There's something off about her diction; lots of other Indian actresses sound perfectly Indian and at the same time manage to speak well) will be cast in a leading role. An Indian girl would be cast only as, well, an Indian character. Hollywood movies - even indie ones - caters mainly to the English speaking world - mainly North America, Europe and Australia, and Indians or characters of Indian origin will only be a part of the supporting/ensemble cast - Freida Pinto a la the new Woody Allen flick. Thing is, poeple, when we Indians refuse to accept a gori/non-Indian looking actress; why, we even don't warm up to someone relatively Indian looking like Barbara Mori or want to see blondes dancing to songs as we don't find that natural, why would the Americans and the British and Europeans and the Aussies go gaga over an Aishwarya Rai or a Deepika Padukone or Hrithik Roshan? They may be big stars in India because they can look pretty and they can sing and dance and smile, it matters jack squat to Non-Indians. Hollywood/English movies are made for the Western audience and is set mostly in the West and has Western characters. Though there are NRI's in the West, these people are a minority and it's unlikely that a mainstream Hollywood movie is going to have an Indian/desi as the protagonist. Just like how a typical Bollywood film won't ever be based on or will star an actress/actor belonging to the minority groups in India like the Assamese or Manipuris.
Deepika isn't an actress; her USP is her looks and her figure, and while these two factors have cemented her place in Bollywood, I don't think it lends her a crossover/international appeal. If a studio wants a 'hot, pretty' girl, there is no dearth of girls like Megan Fox or Olivia Wilde or models - who aren't necessarily Nordic looking - who fit the bill perfectly: Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Alessandra Ambrosio and Miranda Kerr who are not only famous and relatively well-known faces thanks to their Victoria's Secret contracts but they also have the two things Deepika is famous for - looks and killer bodies. Fact is this: Till now, I don't think any Non-white and Non-American/Non British/Non Australian/Non European actress has made it big in Hollywood. I don't think that Asians with their uniquely Asian looks and accents - will in future either. Because your average American is more likely going to relate to an American actress than an Asian one. Sad, but true.
