| If there's one filmmaker today whom every actor worth his salt — whether it's a Mumbai superstar or a Chennai demi God — is actually desperate to work with, it has to be Mani Ratnam. So when Mani took it upon himself to set the ball rolling for his former assistant Shiva who is making his debut as a director with Paki, no one had any doubt that getting the right stars would be a hassle free affair. The film itself is a biopic which Mani himself has scripted and tells the real story of a very close friend of his. Understandably, it's a project very close to Mani's heart. Vivek Oberoi (who has worked with Mani in Yuva) signed up without batting an eyelid. Shaad Ali, who had a cold war going with Vivek since the time they worked on Saathiya, quietly sunk his differences and came on board as the executive director of the project. But when Mani approached Sonam Kapoor to play the female lead, he was in for a shock. The young actor flatly refused the project. Sonam's spokesperson confirmed the news and said, "Yes, Sonam was offered Mani Ratnam's assistant's film. However she did not want to do it because she did not like the role." The turn of events has created quite a flutter in industry circles. With Sonam just two films old, refusing a Mani Ratnam backed film is more than just a bad career decision, it's pretty poor form. |
