How's life been after My Name Is Khan?
MNIK just happened. I never thought I would get the role, nor did I expect the role to become so popular. I'm grateful to my audience for all the love. The role was first offered to Shabana Azmi but she couldn't do it due to non-availability of dates. I'm very happy to have worked with Dharma Productions. It was a wonderful role.
How did you start your career?
I didn't finish my schooling and joined the Pune Film Institute, where I started my career. I always wanted to join films.
What's the best compliment you've ever received?
Raj Kapoor once told me, "Pata hain tu bhangan lagti hai". At that moment, I felt very sad and my face fell down but he continued, "Pata hai kyun? Kyunki main Waheeda (Rehman) ko bhi bhangan kahta tha". I just couldn't believe my ears. I guess that was the best compliment ever. It was more like an award for me.
How did you enter the spotlight?
My first film was Ishq Ishq Ishq with Dev Anand and then Rajshri called me for an audition. Then came Chitchor with Basu Chatterjee where I was asked to wear a small saree (like how girls in Andhra Pradesh wear) so I cut my mom's saree for the film. Then I also did a role in the film Gharonda.
What are your future plans?
Nothing right now. Few scripts did come my way but I didn't like the characters. The role may be small but an actor should get a chance to portray it properly, that's what I believe in.
