A simple tribute to Bollywood
Mumbai: In a stark departure from the glitz and glamour that pervades Bollywood award ceremonies, the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards ceremony held at Bhaidas Hall, Vile Parle, was a simple yet poignant affair.

It was a tribute to the golden years of Hindi cinema by honouring those who made it possible, both in front of the camera and behind.

Although meant to be celebratory, an ironic sadness pervaded the hall as the audience watched their yesteryear favourites take the stage, now aging and diminished versions of their vibrant onscreen personas.

Eminent theatre personality and actor Shriram Lagoo put it best while accepting the award honouring his service to cinema.
"In an industry where you're forgotten as hastily as you're recognised, I feel fortunate to be remembered so fondly today," he said as the audience rose to deliver a standing ovation.

Legendary villain Pran was equally touched. "There was a time when I used to dance on stage to entertain my fans. Today, I come in my wheelchair but my spirit remains young," he grinned. As the screen projected a montage of film clips depicting the enigmatic Pran of popular memory, veteran actor Manoj Kumar came over and rested his hands on the legend's now frail shoulders, conveying in one reassuring gesture that he too felt the same way.

Other awardees included actor Chandrashekhar and comedian Jagdeep, while Dev Anand's compelling as ever presence was a cheerful reminder that some things can defy the test of time.

The awards were presented by Maharashtra deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal amidst thunderous applause from the audience.

"While watching Pran saheb's movie I used to hate his character. He did it with so much passion that everybody was bound to hate his role," Bhujbal said.

"I remember I used to stand in long queues to buy ticket of Dev sahib's movie. His movies like Guide, Hum Dono, Khoya Khoya Chand and others are my favorite," he recalled.

"Maharastra will be completing 50 years tomorrow and that the state has excelled in several ways. Film industry is one of the major contributing factors to the growth of the state," the deputy chief minister said.

"The film industry has faced several issues from piracy to extortion but with the support of the entire industry it has bravely fought these problems. Despite several actors receiving extortion calls, no one has left Mumbai, which is a proud thing for us," he added.
