Hey guys!

Indian Idol 5 has begun. It might turn out to be the best season in my opinion. There are a number of changes to the show this time, which people may or may not pick up on...

The show is no longer being produced by Miditech. It is now produced by Freemantle (the owners of the international 'Idol' format) and Wizcraft. The priority of the show this time round is going to be singing talent - the judges will focus much less on performance/x-factor/looks/style etc.

How will this be done?

Well, firstly, there are two new judges Sunidhi and Salim. They are very successful current generation musicians in Bollywood. For the first time, there will be a judges panel composed solely of musicians - no more lyricists, choreographers or actresses! This means that the judges will evaluate the contestants' vocals even more closely. We have already seen some examples of this in the audition rounds...

Secondly, there is a chance that the judges will have a veto power to save good contestants from being voted off the show due to regionalism or other biases. This was the reason behind the whole controversy with Anu Malik threatening to quit - he wanted more power for the judges. if this is granted, then singing on the show is likely to just get better!

Thirdly, there may also be 'mentors' other than judges helping to hone the skills of the contestants this time round...

Whatsay? Might this be the best Indian Idol season yet?

I think the 1st and the 2nd season were the best....2nd had some awesome singers, Amey Date, Karunya, Sandeep etc...
anyone know that Indian Idol 3 Finale broke all voting records? It got 7 crore votes! The most till now...

The show has just been launched, let it see how it performs in the market, only then I will comment, but it looks promising. TRP dekhtein hai kya gul khilata hai.

The TRP comment is very interesting, cosworthkid, because it is the first time such a big reality show will be aired on weeknights and not weekends. So there may be clashes with primetime saas-bahu serials which have hooked many Indian women...

On one hand, the show could be a TRP disaster as people loyally stick to their favourite soaps. On the other hand, the show could be a TRP hit as it is designed for the whole family and not just women - grandparents, parents and children of all ages can enjoy this show.

As for talent of the singers, I think the most talented singers will be attracted to reality shows which have good judges. Sonu Nigam is a huge singing star and he would have attracted many singers to Indian Idol (like Ameya Date and Rahul Vaidya). Hopefully Sunidhi will have a similar effect. Also, Salim is a hotshot music director these days and struggling singers will be attracted to the show because of him too - he can gie them a big break. In the past, many of the best contestants may have gone to other shows like Star Voice of India or SRGMP, but this time I think Indian Idol will have some great singers too.

Yes, its a daring gamble because the weekends will be dominated by 2 kid-based dancing shows. I have no interest in dancing shows though.

@ bold -- exactly!!! That was something that would always annoy me.. This time even the judges seem to be in good decisions with each other on the singers.. 😊
@ red --- wish to see that happening.. 😍
I found season 1 and 2 to be like THE best ... wish this season turns out to be another excellent season.. 😳

I too liked season 1 and 2 the best...not happy with the second season results though...but hope so this time its all about singing and not about Main aisa kyu hoon rona dhona and x-factor BS...and love the Masters this time...esp Sunidhi and Salim...Anu too gives good coments but sometimes TRP ke chakkar mein he overdoes it...gosh can't believe they had Farah, Sonali and Alisha as the judges before..

It's looking pretty good till now...let's see what happens. It's too early to judge upon it's success, IMO. But the points you made will make it very interesting to watch, especially the veto power, as the public has made bad decisions in the past(namely Karunya, Amit Sana, Emon and the most important, Rajdeep ).
