Indian Idol 5 has begun. It might turn out to be the best season in my opinion. There are a number of changes to the show this time, which people may or may not pick up on...
The show is no longer being produced by Miditech. It is now produced by Freemantle (the owners of the international 'Idol' format) and Wizcraft. The priority of the show this time round is going to be singing talent - the judges will focus much less on performance/x-factor/looks/style etc.
How will this be done?
Well, firstly, there are two new judges Sunidhi and Salim. They are very successful current generation musicians in Bollywood. For the first time, there will be a judges panel composed solely of musicians - no more lyricists, choreographers or actresses! This means that the judges will evaluate the contestants' vocals even more closely. We have already seen some examples of this in the audition rounds...
Secondly, there is a chance that the judges will have a veto power to save good contestants from being voted off the show due to regionalism or other biases. This was the reason behind the whole controversy with Anu Malik threatening to quit - he wanted more power for the judges. if this is granted, then singing on the show is likely to just get better!
Thirdly, there may also be 'mentors' other than judges helping to hone the skills of the contestants this time round...
Whatsay? Might this be the best Indian Idol season yet?
