An Indian court has sentenced Bollywood actor Salman Khan to one year's imprisonment and a fine of INR 5,000-00 after finding him guilty of killing of two chinkaras, a deer species, at Bhavad village in Rajasthan in 1998. However, seven others accused in the case, including comedian Satish Shah, have been acquitted. Actor Salman was present when the judgment was pronounced in the packed courtroom. He was convicted under the Wildlife Protection Act. The sentence will come into effect after one month. This is to recall that Salman was charged with hunting chinkaras during the night of September 26 and 27, 1998, when he was in Jodhpur for the shooting of filmmaker Sooraj Barjataya.

In the wake of the court judgment, the film industry is concerned over the big losses amounting to INR 750 million to be incurred by it in case Salman is not available to act in his feature films like Ravi Chopra's 'Babul', besides 'Jaaneman', 'Salaam-e-Ishq' and 'Marigold'. Apart from these movies, Salman's absence will affect his ad and promotion films worth INR 250 million. The star is also shooting for his brother Sohail Khan's home production. Despite all this, the industry is banking on the hope that Salman will go in appeal against the judgment and this might drag on for years. Incidentally, another case involving Khan -- a hit and run incident in which one person was killed is expected to conclude soon in a Mumbai court. This is another setback facing the film industry.
