Shall we start discussing or just argue??

In this part of the world we have a big problem of temperament. You start a discussion anywhere, in the office, home, friends, assemblies, tv and forums etc. in shortest possible time you see people fuming with rage. No one wants to listen to the other person, his point of view and make any effort to understand as to why is he saying it. Instead we love to interrupt the moment "we" think what is other person is upto and want to respond back in a harshest way possible, being as rude as possible. In short we want to kill him with our words. The discussions moves off the topic and results in to an argument. What a pity!

Why do we do this? Is it our ego? Can't we stand any one to differ with us? or think differently? Do we like to argue instead of discussing? Do we like to let other person down? or we like to ridicule the other person because we don't have respect for others. We mostly would like to prove the other person wrong.

Freedom of speech means that you are responsible for what you say, its being more careful with your words and tone rather than the liberty to be a loud-mouth person who has a freedom to bash anyone.

Its not uncommon to see that the discussion shifts to arguments and at times totally different axis. The person wants the opinion on East and West whereas the other person is arguing on North and South.

I think the IForums is a wonderful place for all of us to practice how to discuss and give and take opinions. Instead of going to the club and recreation centers to meet people we can discuss from home.

Here in my suggestion as how do we keep the sanity in our discussions. This suggestion will not cover the topic comprehensively in view of the length of this post but more as a general guideline. (I will be using she and her instead of he/she and his/her)

1. The topic writer should identify whether she needs a feedback or share her thoughts or concerns about any show or if she likes or dislikes a show or an actor/character.

She should always give a background first so that it becomes easier for others to understand her perspective. Then she should be specific as to what she likes or dislikes about it and her opinion as to why she is saying so.

If she wants to share her thoughts or point of view then again she should put a specific statement to make it clear for the people commenting or responding. Preferably Agree or DisAgree, Yes or NO, For and Against.

2. Now for us friends responding to the topics. Let us not use our fixed and per-conceived responses. Understand as to where the topic maker is coming from, what perspective she has and what is her opinion or what sort of input she wants from us. The person commenting should not react, which we are almost tuned to do, jump to kill, instead see whether we agree or disagree with her point of view within that perspective. For instance if our favorite actor is caught stealing in real life and we are asked whether this will leave a bad image on the young fans, we ignore the question and its perspective and write myfavoriteactor roxx!! or point to some other actor as he was also involved in extra marital relationship. Then the fan of that actor jumps in to blame back the first actor who was caught stealing. Such responses takes us nowhere.

If we keep ourselves focused on the topic and give our point of view intelligently then so many people can learn and benefit from our discussions. The owners of shows can easily pickup the drift and understand why do people want the change and what is it they actually want.

So is it possible for us to use IForums to our advantage and groom ourselves in becoming people who can listen, stand people to differ and give in our opinion without breaking the other person's neck?

I think they will discuss light subjects like cricket n fight and quarell about sensitive subjects like religion, politics and countries and favourite actors n actress.
Generally heavy subjects do attract spammers.
Perhaps discussion on some subjects should be by invitation only.😆

Mars35913062: Interesting combination of numbers you got there.

You are expecting ideal behavior from a bunch of people on a public forum who are, in a way, hiding behind a computer. Those are lofty expectations. Nothing wrong with having an idealistic view but you are bound to be disappointed when you don't get what you are looking for.

In my experience, I have seen that the intensity of a debate also depends on the relationships between the participants of the debate. For example, an argument would end up one-sided if it involves a boss and his subordinate or a father and his kid. The boss talks and the subordinate listens. The father speaks and the kid obeys. No debate there. But on these public forums all are 'equal' and all would want to voice their opinions. Nobody is going to back down.

BTW, for someone who has only 18 posts, you seem to have found out too much too soon about the type of people inhabiting these forums. Good for you.

One way to make sure that very few people argue with you is to post a completely abstract topic. 😊
Don't ask me how I know that. I just do.

Thanks for your feedback, after all the people on the forum have picked up this attitude or behavior from somewhere, its never built in.Thief is not a thief by birth, he chooses to be a thief. We choose all the bad things unintentionally or otherwise. The thumb rule which I follow is to actually whatever good thing you learn, pass it on to the person nearest to you and spread it as much as possible. You don't know who will benefit from it. You may have picked up so many nice habits or things from different people (bosses, celebrities, books colleagues, parents) without their knowing about.

Unfortunately I am quite a positive person.😛 You know that no one can achieve 100% or even more than 20% (lets be pessimistic) But at least I can try. Even if one person understands what I am saying and follows it too, I think I have done my bit.

We need to understand the "freedom of speech" and respect other persons opinion. As they say opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one. So there is a person attach to each opinion we must respect the person and may disagree with opinion at the same time

Regards

Mars,

Lovely debate. In a world of PC banality where people's opinions are as shallow as their smiles, do we want the last refuge of intelligent, open debate to fall prey to hypocrisy too.

I agree there is no excuse for lack of etiquette we are all brothers and sisters of this human race. If I cut you then do i not bleed too.

Animal Farm or Alice in Wonderland?

Fans become fanatics and they will stand up for anything. If you're against the hawt hunk of the serial, you're not in their good books. Even attempting to make fans understand that not everyone actually likes the guy/girl they're crazy about would be stupidity on our parts.

Anyways, generally speaking, live and let live. If you don't believe in something, don't expect others to let go of their faith. Realize that there is such a thing as difference of opinion. Especially here in the Debate Mansion, not everyone will agree with you ... that is not why we come here. We come here to disagree, to share our point of view, and hopefully through an enlightening discussion learn something about the other side as well. You don't have to like it, you don't have to agree with it, but you do have to respect it.

Resorting to dirty language, personal attacks, and rude behavior when someone does not agree with you shows your class, not their's. Learn to respect that beliefs there, that you cannot impose your beliefs upon anyone else or expect them to lead their lives based upon your idea of right and wrong. Respect it, appreciate it, and deal with it.

Thanks Sabah for reaching me here too.😃 This Forum is such a good place to practice and build up the temperament for discussions. (Even if you pull your hair out in anger, still no one can see you.) I am very positive that few will use this forum to their advantage to express themselves effectively and put across and accept the difference of opinion in a decent way.😊
