Ssk - Sunidhi's 'Mehboob Mere' from Fiza (2001) was also notable, and could be credited as her break through song. It showcased her voice as the sultry item number voice, a label which has stuck till now!
Uniquely for this generation of singers, Sunidhi has a versatility in her voice not seen since Asha Bhosle's times. It is an amazing quality which allows Sunidhi's voice to adapt to the song situation and the actress so well.
We get a glimpse of this chameleonlike quality in her voice when she changes from the main verses of the song to the 'Dhoom machale' chorus. There is a definite change in her voice (and scale if im not mistaken).
Of course there are some subtle nuances that help to express the feeling of the song. Most effective for me was the slight voice breaking effect she does occasionally throughout the song.
However, doing an adequate or even a good job in such a song is not enough to reach the topmost marks. And I must remind my fellow judge that you have to use 'an average film song = 5 marks' as the yardstick here. Had she had a section to freak out with her voice or to show more vocal range, Sunidhi could have accessed the 9's and 9.5's. In this performance, the beats, arrangements and effects seemed to have lifted Sunidhi's singing more than the other way round.
It IS an amazing performance, but neither is it her best nor does it take the song to higher levels. The fact that this dance song became out of many item numbers was probably because of its picturisation, the scale of the movie and the arrangements in the song. Sunidhi's voice was definitely the only suitable one for the song, but singing-wise I can't honestly give more than 8 marks.
So, 8 out of 10 from me.
