The call was received at 7.30 pm by his assistant. The caller who did not identify himself requested for the address on the pretext of discussing a case with the 30-year-old lawyer.
Azmi was the defence lawyer for Fahim Ansari in the 26/11 trial, as well as for several 7/11 blasts accused. He was fatally shot four times by unknown assailants in Kurla at around 7.30 pm on Thursday. Azmi was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, where he was declared dead.
According to police, three unidentified men posing as clients arrived at Azmi's office located in Taximen's Colony, building number 2. "The men told his peon, Inder, that they wanted to discuss a case with him.
The peon told them to wait for a while outside the office," said API Mohan Jadhav of the Kurla police station. The men retreated to a secluded corner of the office and waited.
When Azmi was free, he asked for the men to be shown in. "The men took out their guns and fired five rounds at Azmi, of which four rounds found their mark in his chest. Azmi probably succumbed to his injuries on the spot," added Jadhav.
According to senior crime branch officers, the men had planned the strike well. "One person waited outside the office gate as a guard, and the two other men went inside and shot him repeatedly in the chest. They then rushed outside the house. When a watchman tried to stop them, they threatened to kill him as well," said the officer.
According to eyewitnesses, the men fled in an auto rickshaw. Police are now interrogating the watchman and Inder, who are the only eyewitnesses to the incident.
Sketch artists have also been summoned to the location to make sketches of the accused. Police have registered a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigations into the case are ongoing.
