First review of GOF DVD

Lizo from CBBC Newsround received an early copy of the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire DVD and today published his review of it. He said that it's "the most comprehensive set of DVD extras yet for a Potter film," but it only includes an hour and a half of special features and does not include any director's commentary from Mike Newell, who promised one at the GOF premieres ("of course," he said). No interview with JK Rowling was filmed for this DVD either.

JKR writes piece for Sunday Times

JK Rowling wrote a touching piece about institutionalized European children for today's edition of The Sunday Times. In it, she discusses how she became involved in the Children's High Level Group, her visit to Romania last month, and her upcoming trip to the Czech Republic. She concludes her article by saying:
One of my first thoughts, when I finished reading that initial article by Justin Sparks, was "why didn't I know about this? How could I not know about it?" I had momentarily forgotten that human suffering, however dreadful and on however wide a scale, will always go ignored and unheard unless somebody is prepared to shout about it, and others are ready to act. It is phenomenally easy both to hide and to silence children once separated from their families. They are small and portable, their language skills aren't great, they don't have lawyers and they aren't registered to vote. Abandoned, neglected, caged or trafficked, these children were intended by nature to be protected by their parents. Now it is somebody else's job — partly, mine.
The full article can be read at The Sunday Times.

Steve Kloves talks GOF

Thanks very much to reader Jennifer, we have scans of the Steve Kloves article in Creative Screenwriting we told you about last month. Kloves said that "I've never worked harder on any movie in my life than I did on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It was the most difficult thing I've ever done." Here's an excerpt:
Newell's strengths are the revealing character moments. "Sometimes I think he doesn't realize how gifted he is at that," Kloves notes. He cites a key moment in Goblet of Fire, which also highlights one of the more serious themes in the story - Ron's jealousy that Harry's inheritance allows him things that Ron's poor family cannot afford (and, in more general terms, the way Ron is often in Harry's shadow). It is a class rift that should not be overplayed but that Kloves feels is effective in giving the relationship some subtext, in which "what's being said doesn't necessarily reflect what's going on." The moment occurs on the train, and Newell plays it very subtly; so subtly, in fact, that "at first I thought it's too subtle. But it doesn't matter because it's not a plot moment, so people will either pick it up or not." When Ron orders a couple of items off the trolley and realizes he has only enough money for one, Harry offers to pay, to which Ron responds, "'No, no, it's all right.' But it's not accented at all. You'll miss it in a second if you're not watching for it. But it's character-consistent, which is nice. Ron doesn't want Harry paying his way. Rupert turns away, doesn't even make an issue of it. That's a sign of maturity on Ron's part, which is, 'Let's not even talk about it.'"
The full article can be read here. Thanks again, Jennifer!

Dan talks 'Order of the Phoenix'

In an interview with MTV, Daniel Radcliffe offered some insight into his preparation for shooting Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix:
Radcliffe prepared for "Phoenix" by meeting with a bereavement counselor so he could understand survivor's guilt, since his two main relationships in this film — with his godfather Sirius Black and new girlfriend Cho Chang — are grounded in a mutual need to bond with another person after a great, shared loss.

"Sirius is clinging on to James (Harry's father and Sirius' best friend) through me, and I'm trying to know my father through him," Radcliffe said. "The same thing happens with me and Cho. I was the last person there when her last boyfriend, Cedric, was killed."
Thanks, Annie!

New pictures of Evanna Lynch

Warner Bros. just sent over a new promotional picture of 14 year-old Evanna Lynch, who was cast earlier today as Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Evanna was hospitalized in June 2003, when the Order of the Phoenix was released in bookstores, but she was allowed out of her hospital for an hour to pick up one of six signed copies of the book in Ireland. A picture of her with her book (at age 11, and with brown hair) can be seen at the galleries.

Update: Thanks to Newsround, we have two more pictures of Evanna - this promotional picture released earlier today and this picture of her in line at a local bookstore on July 15, 2005 (she was first in line).

Luna, Tonks, Umbridge, and Bellatrix cast!

Warner Bros. announced five new members of the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix cast this morning: 14 year-old Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood (pictured left), Natalia Tena as Nymphadora Tonks, Imelda Staunton as Professor Umbridge, Helen McCrory as Bellatrix Lestrange, and Kathryn Hunter as Mrs. Figg.

Principal photography will begin on Monday, February 6 at Leavesden Studios.

JKR to attend Queen's 80th birthday bash

JK Rowling is slated to attend the Queen's 80th birthday bash at Buckingham Palace this June, along with a number of British children aged four to fourteen. The theme of the birthday tea party is British children's literature.

Jo said, "I can think of no better way to mark the Queen's 80th birthday than with a party for children at the Palace with some of the best loved characters from children's literature.

"Harry and I are very much looking forward to attending, particularly as we understand that, despite his alleged membership of the aristocracy, Lord Voldemort has not been invited."

Thanks, Katherine!

More OotP casting news

CBBC Newsround reports that Michael Wildman has been cast as the centaur Magorian in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, shooting on which starts this month. According to Newsround, "It's unclear whether Michael will be enhanced by special effects, or if the character will be computer generated, with Michael just doing his voice."

More OotP casting announcements are expected to be made within the next day.

Creepy new Wizard of the Month

Goblins, beware! The Wizard of the Month at JKRowling.com has been updated for the month of February, and this guy's creepy - probably one of Lucius Malfoy's ancestors.

GOF snubbed at Academy Awards

Nominations for the 78th Annual Academy Awards were announced this morning, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was most unfortunately overlooked in almost every category, but it did receive a nomination for Best Art Direction, up against films such as King Kong and Memoirs of a Geisha.

The three nominees for Best Visual Effects are The Chronicles of Narnia, King Kong, and War of the Worlds.

Students Meet Dan on the DB Set

Many thanks to Jas from DR Online for sending over a scan from the Jan 12th issue of The Islander, the local newspaper of Kangaroo Island, Australia, where parts of Dan's next film, December Boys, were shot. The scan shows a very nice account of a visit to the DB set by a local principal and student and how they met with Dan, his dad and director Rod Hardy. It also has some interesting insights into Dan's rigorous shooting schedule.
