In Chapter Nine of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry disobeys a direct order from one of the teachers at Hogwarts School and takes off on a broom. This infraction is normally cause for expulsion from the school. However, in Harry's case, it brings him the honor of being chosen as the "Seeker" for his Quidditch team. In other instances, Harry's school nemesis, Draco Malfoy and his other Slytherin friends, are excused without any punishment for arriving to Potions class late (not once, but many times) by Professor Snape, while students of any other house are docked points for it.

1. What other examples of favoritism are showed in the series, and how does this reflect on JKR's perception of a 'normal' school life?

2. In the series, we see scenes where the Gryffindors are favored above Slytherins in lots of instances, but we hear of the instances where the Slytherins (or other houses) are favored above the Gryffindors. Keeping it in mind that this series is written kind of in Harry's POV (though it is 3rd person), and as Harry is a Gryffindor we would learn more about that house, do you think one house was favored more in the series? Or do you think favoritism was equal with all 4 houses? How did this effect your reading?

3. Favoritism is usually associated with being negative, but can it also have a positive effect on people? Can you think of any instances in the series where favoritism gave a positive effect on one or more of the characters?

4. Finally, which professor do you think portrayed most favoritism towards one or more of the students, and what were his/her reasons for it? Were his/her reasons justified or were they aimed at hurting another student(s)'s feelings?

Hope you guys have fun answering these questions.😳 Sorry if they sound a bit too studious for a fun DOTW.😆

Great DOTW..

1. What other examples of favoritism are showed in the series, and how does this reflect on JKR's perception of a 'normal' school life?
Snape giving exclusive permission for training to Slytherin to train their new seeker Draco malfoy in HP2.
(There are more involving Snape showing favouritsm..may edit later and mention them)

after Harry gets selected as 4th champion in HP4, the Hufflepuff house head Professor Sprout shows indifference and a slightly annoyed attitude towards Harry

all the teachers show their gratitude to Harry after he gives interview to Rita Skeeter in HP5

Hmm..It being Harry 's POV..all the favoritism shown against Gryffindor is described..
yes I felt Gryffindor was always shown to be the best..or commpetition between Gryff & Slytherin is shown..Other houses are sidelined..Even it is mentioned that Cedric Diggory brought some glory to Hufflepuff after being selected as Triwizard champion...

Well I felt like Slytherin common room was shown others should also be shown..
my wish got partially fulfiilled in HP7 when Ravenclaw room was shown...
I especially liked the password difference between houses..Like for slytherin it was "pure blood"..for ravenclaw it was a puzzle..Wonder what was Hufflepuff 's

3. Favoritism is usually associated with being negative, but can it also have a positive effect on people? Can you think of any instances in the series where favoritism gave a positive effect on one or more of the characters?Yes..Neville Longbottom was favoured by Professor Sprout..well because he was very good at it..Professor sprou tells this to Mc Gongall who tells Neville to take up Herbology..she tells she ll inform Augusta Longbottom too...
Well this favouritism helped Neville..who goes on to become a Professor!!! in Herbology

4. Finally, which professor do you think portrayed most favoritism towards one or more of the students, and what were his/her reasons for it? Were his/her reasons justified or were they aimed at hurting another student(s)'s feelings?Undoubtedly Professor Snape..
He is always biased against Gryffindor....always looks to somehow punish the Gryffindor..be it to win Quidditch Cup or to just be spiteful...

His reasons are not justified..He shud keep his enimity outside the teaching class

Okios m back:)
First of all, I would like to say one thing: the reason we see so much of favoritism in Hogwarts is because of the house system. I remember having made a topic once upon a time about Sorting. My opinion was that sorting should be done away with since it has created unnecessary rifts among the students. But couple of people convinced me that sorting was a great way to add fun and healthy competition in school and it is upto the students to be friendly to kids outside their group. So, the point I'm trying to make is that favouritism, although seemingly unfair, is natural - it is human nature to do that- although I think there are instances where it went just a tad overboard.

1. What other examples of favoritism are showed in the series, and how does this reflect on JKR's perception of a 'normal' school life?
Dumbledore was always partial towards Gryfinddors, this can be seen in Book1- I think it was totally ridiculous how he gave house points to the Trio+Neville (mind you, although his reasons were honorable and all). That night Slytherins deserved to win the House Cup (is it called the house cup-don't remember-you see I hardly bother with these power equations in the books-I'm like Hermione that way-"what does it matter?"😆)
And dear old Snape doesn't even deserve a mention-does he? He's just blatantly biased what ever his reasons might be.

The books are centered around our little hero-Harry! So yeah, it's not really about the FOUR houses. Most of it was Gryfinddor-Slytherin. So as I mentioned, it's either someone favouring G over S, or S over G. See, it all balances out. And we're supossed to go all happy and mushy when Gryfinddor wins (not really)😳
3. Favoritism is usually associated with being negative, but can it also have a positive effect on people? Can you think of any instances in the series where favoritism gave a positive effect on one or more of the characters?
I guess it can make the students work harder- but for me it's still negative. It one of those human traits you just need to accept (when it can't be changed)-right there with bigotry and prejudice:)
4. Finally, which professor do you think portrayed most favoritism towards one or more of the students, and what were his/her reasons for it? Were his/her reasons justified or were they aimed at hurting another student(s)'s feelings?
I would say Slughorn with his Slug Club.😆
The reasons were completely justified. Atleast he didn't discriminate between houses.😆
Last but not the least, the author herself thinks that courage is the MOST superior quality that you can possess. Is this her favoritism towards Gryfinddors, what say?😉

Great topic!👏

1. What other examples of favoritism are showed in the series, and how does this reflect on JKR's perception of a 'normal' school life?
Snape sweetheart is an epitome of Favoritism.😆

Favoritism was mainly towards Slytherin in the book because like you said,Harry was the story teller in one way.The story revolved around him and he is the central character so things were shown from his POV..So,we mainly get to see Favoritism towards Slytherin and Snape was surely an epitome of Favoritism but,had it been Draco for the central character then maybe we would have got to see the Favoritism towards Harry by Dumbledore coz ofcourse he was the 'Precious Potter'😆

3. Favoritism is usually associated with being negative, but can it also have a positive effect on people? Can you think of any instances in the series where favoritism gave a positive effect on one or more of the characters?
Let's look at it this way.The person who is showered with 'Favoritism' will always try and prove himself again and again.Let's take the example of Harry here!He never let the favoritism by Dumbledore get into his head and this favoritism helped him excel as a person/student/hero.He knew that Dumbledore had left him a big job and he completed that!
But,the other effects of favoritism can be jealousy which is not very good and people who are favored over the others do walk in air many times!😆

4. Finally, which professor do you think portrayed most favoritism towards one or more of the students, and what were his/her reasons for it? Were his/her reasons justified or were they aimed at hurting another student(s)'s feelings?
Snape sweets ofcourse!😆
His main reason for favoritism was to help Slytherin excel but his actions were no where close to being justified because his counterparts didn't act the same way(Eg:-McGonagall).
They always lived upto their 'Professor of Hogwarts' title first and then 'Head of House' later!
Prof.Sprout can be excused for once when she was indifferent towards Harry for being chosen the Champion along with Cedric*Blushes* because that perhaps was the only time when she did that unlike Snape who always favored Slytherins over every other house!
