And general entertainment channels (GECs) are ensuring that they keep the heart-thumping moments coming by the second.

If Ekta Kapoor began the fad of 'serial crossover', then post the demise of the 'K Klan' the new trend of 'one hour special episode' has caught on like wildfire. If Uttaran, Balika Vadhu, Naa Aana Iss Des Meri Laado and Bhagyavidhata have reaped in the benefits of the one hour special, then Bidaai, Chhoti Bahu, Pavitra Rishta, Jhansi Ki Rani and the kind too have discovered the benefits of the specials — skyrocketing TRPs.
Earlier shows like Bidaai experimented with the one hour special that raked in a healthy TRP between 6 to 7.5 . "One hour specials are liked by the audiences specially when turning points are coming in the storyline. People who love the shows want more and more. Bidaai was one hour for three months and the response was good," says producer Rajan Shahi. Elaborating on the trend, Shahi says, "It's not just a matter of weekend one-hour specials. If people are glued to the show they definitely like to see the telecast for a longer schedule than just the given 20 minutes. It also helps the makers in showcasing different dimensions."
With reality shows ending for the season and movies not being able to grab the eyeballs, one hour specials are a sure shot way of grabbing attention on weekends. "One hour specials have proven to be quite beneficial for the channel. The ratings for such shows have been very encouraging. But then such episodes are aired only when they make sense," says Shailja Kejriwal, EVP of a leading GEC. Sukesh Motwani creative head of another top GEC feels that the one hour specials help the viewer to get more out of their favourite dailies. "This variation in scheduling is a win-win situation for both channels and viewers. It helps us sustain our viewership and maintain the interest level in the show. It spices things up a bit," says Motwani whose channel raked in healthy TRPs for their one hour special in Jhansi Ki Rani and 12/24 Karol Bagh.
Danish Khan, VP Marketing of another GEC feels that the trend is here to stay. "I had said earlier that this year channels will push hard in the fight for supremacy. One hour special episodes of the already popular shows is a sure shot way to making the viewer stay loyal to that particular channel even on a weekend," explains Khan.
But many warn of the pitfalls of following the trend blindly. "Irrespective of the length, the one -hour special should have enough content to make it a hit with the audience," says Shahi. "Just having a one hour special for the sake of trend is not done. Do it only when it's necessary and do not leave the audience high and dry," says Kejriwal.
