SaJan:
G: Dad!!! I'm finished my homework! Can I go out and play now??!
D: (rolling his eyes) Ur not gonna leave me alone till I let u go…r u?
Gunjan shook her head.
D: Ok. But only until dinnertime. When Mamma calls u, u have to come in right away.
Gunjan nodded and skipped off into the woods to explore.
D: Don't go too far! I won't come to get u!!
Her father admonished. It was a beautiful evening. The sun was just in the process of setting as it usually did in Samarpur. Gunjan and her family had just recently moved into the new town. Gunjan was finding it very difficult to adjust. New house, new people, new everything. And she had practically given up hope on making any friends. Sometimes she wished that she could be more like her sister. She always made new friends. She already had her own clique. They were the 'in' group. Because of her shyness, Gunjan had never really…fit in.
She picked up a stick and began writing in the mud.
She had written
'LOSER'
In big bold letters. After all, that's what everybody at school called her. She had come to think that maybe they were right. Maybe she really was a loser. She threw away the stick and traipsed on…deeper…deeper into the woods. She had lost all track of time… and place. By the time she noticed the darkness that was surrounding her, it was too late. She had gone so deep into the woods that she couldn't find her way back! Gunjan's heart thudded. She felt her uneven breath.
'Papa? Are u there?'
She whispered softly. Her voice was quavering. She was met by an echo. She shivered. All of a sudden, it had gotten freezing cold. She wrapped her dupatta around her even tighter.
'Di!!!'
She called out. No answer.
'Di!! Plz come get me!! I'm scared!!!!!'
She screamed in the loudest voice she could manage. Silence. She plopped down on a rotted log and cried.
'Di! Mamma! Papa!! Anyone!!!! Plz! Save me!!!!'
She cried louder. What if she never got home? What if she never saw her family again!!!
'Mam—'
She was cut off by the sound of a boy.
'Offo! Why are u yelling?! I heard u the 1st time!! What's going on here???!'
Gunjan ran over to him and hugged him. He was a boy, maybe 2 years older then her. About 11.
'Thank god ur here!! Otherwise I dunno what I would have done!!'
The boy hugged her back, surprised and uncertain of what to do.
'Hey!! Just relax!! I'm here now! Everything's gonna be ok!'
Gunjan pulled out of his arms and blushed a bright shade of red. Wow!! She couldn't believe she had hugged A BOY!!!
'Oh! I'm sorry!'
She murmured.
The boy smiled.
'Ok, ok. What's up? Why are u screaming and breaking my eardrums?'
He rubbed his ear, as if to prove his point.
Gunjan wiped away her tears and sniffled.
'Actually…I'm new to this place and I kind of go lost in the woods…can u take me home?'
The boy laughed.
'And if I refuse?'
Gunjan had clearly not been expecting this kind of a response.
'um…I…I…'
He laughed again. His laugh was sweet. Boyish… but still sweet. It made Gunjan smile as well.
'I'm just kidding! Of course I'll take u home! That is…if u will trust me!'
Gunjan nodded.
'Yeah…I just wanna go home!'
The boy smiled and raised his hand out to her.
'Hi. I'm Samrat.'
She looked at him curiously. It was the first time that a boy wanted to make friends with HER.
She slowly met his hand with hers.
'Gunjan.'
The boy frowned, playing her name in his mind. He shook his head.
'I don't like ur name.'
Gunjan looked at him, astonished.
'Excuse me?'
She asked.
'I said, I DON"T LIKE URNAME!'
He repeated louder.
Gunjan rolled her eyes.
'I know stupid! I heard u ! I meant, what do u mean?'
Samrat nodded knowingly.
'Ur name doesn't suit .'
He explained.
Gunjan made a face.
'Oh really? Then what would u have named me?'
Samrat smiled.
'Glad u asked! I would have named u…lets see…'
He looked deep in thought. Gunjan had almost thought that Samrat wasn't going to answer her when he called.
'CHASHMISH!!'
She turned around.
'What???!!!!!'
She asked.
Samrat looked at her triumphantly .
'Chashmish! IT's perfect! Absolutely perfect!!!'
Gunjan's muth was wide open. She pointed a finger at him.
'U will NOT call me chashmish. U got that?'
Samrat stuck his tongue out.
'Who's gonna stop me?'
He challenged.
He ran through the trees, with gunjan following closely behind.
'Stop!! Stop!!!'
Gunjan screamed.
Samrat laughed and ran on.
'No ways Babes!'
'BABES!!!????'
Gunjan howled.
'U…u….!'
She stuttered chasing after him. Before they knew it, they had raced out of the woods and onto gunjan's street.
Samrat stopped running. He looked upset.
'Well.. I guess ur home! Bye.'
He was about to leave when gunjan called him from behind.
'Samrat! Umm. Can we meet again…tomorrow?'
Samrat turned around, smiling. He nodded.
'Of course! …Chashmish!'
He teased. He ran away, with Gunjan rolling her eyes. She wiped her feet on the doormat and marched indoors.
They had parted that night but little did they know that that meeting…was the start of a beautiful love story.
