Rani Mukerji apparently had a meeting in Toronto with acclaimed writer, Salman Rushdie and filmmaker, Deepa Mehta for a film based on the novel, Midnight's Children.

Sources reveal that Rushdie wants Rani in the film because he likes her. Mehta seems to share the sentiments and said that she has always wanted to work with Rani. "I saw her work in Hey Ram, Black, Bunty Aur Babli and Veer Zaara and loved it. She is among the best talent in India today," she said.

Mehta is tight-lipped about the forthcoming film and only says, "We've just finished the screenplay and we're going to do the casting in the next couple of weeks. We hope to start filming in September."

As we reported earlier, the film will also star Seema Biswas, Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das.

I like the book - but question is - will they be able to do proper justice to the story and make a good film out of it? It's normally difficult to make a good film out of a book, especially if they turn out to be books that contain supernatural element / magic realism. Besides, I'm not sure what Rani's role is, how important it is, etc.
I hope she signs the Jessica movie too.

Oh and lastly - isn't it flattering to have prestigious authors liking you and your performance - especially when your film had been doing a pretty bad business in the box office for the last 2-3 years. But then again, as they say - true talent survives through time. And the fate of a film doesn't reveal your talent - your performance does. Rani might be one of the few actresses who had manged to deliver both commercial and critical successes in equal proportions.

Oh yeah, I can see the number of fatwas coming forward towards him again. Sometimes I wonder if we have progressed at all from the stone age. Apparently not.
Won't delve into anything deeper, as I can already sense the daggers coming my way.
