In the earlier episodes, we learn that Abhi had worked part-time and saved money to buy the jeep. It's the only thing he owns. Also, it does strike me odd and gives a rather disappointing angle to the storyline with Abhi asking Nukul for a job. Very distressing as we would like to see Abhi having "one up" over Nukul since it's Abhi we all like so much. If that's the case, let's at least have the producers show he's "better" than Nukul for real.
The point is that Abhi should not need a job when he asks for Simi's hand in marriage. The goal is to make sure that Simi will no longer be betrothed to other suitors which will give Abhi time to finish his education and get a career. However, the writers clearly don't think far ahead nor do they think their audience is very intelligent to figure these things out (or least the audience for whom this show is written).
