CHAPTER 25
Coming out of the bathroom, now dressed in a black night dress, Heer couldn't help smiling at her husband who stood near the window,, talking to Aman on his cell phone, his back towards her. Hanging her dress in the wardrobe, she took out a white kurta and pajama for Prem to wear to bed as he hadn't changed out of his clothes yet. She was putting her jewels away thinking of the day she came to know that she was pregnant and couldn't help recalling the argument that they had had in the morning about Rishab. A small frown came on her face and so lost was she in her thoughts that she didn't notice Prem getting off his call until he slid his hands around her pulling her closer to him.
'May I know what's disturbing my beautiful wife at this hour?" he asked cutely looking at her through the mirror, his head resting on her shoulder.
"Prem," she started hesitantly and turned in his arms to look at him. Sensing that something was definitely worrying her Prem looked down at her concerned.
'What sweetie?" he asked gently.
First promise me that you wont get angry," she mumbled her hands playing with his tie, her mind unable to comprehend on how to bring up the subject of Rishab in front of Prem who detested him from the very core of his heart.
Noting the tense playing of her hands, Prem took hold of her hands, making her look up. "I won't get angry. I promise," he assured her and smiled in order to encourage her so that she wouldn't refrain from sharing it with him.
Now tell me what's wrong," he prodded.
"Prem did you give any thought to what I said to you the morning we had our first argument?" she asked tentatively looking at him. Seeing him frown in concentration as he tried to remember, Heer waited for him to answer her. The tightening of his jaw a while later told her that he remembered it as clearly as she did.
"Heer... we are not having this conversation again" Prem said with an edge to his voice as he tried to control the surge of anger that rose inside him like a turbulent storm. Clamping his fists at his sides, he moved away from the haven of her arms, running his hand roughly through his hair in obvious frustration. Even though Prem had put him behind bars but the mere recollection of things that he had done to Heer and his family made him recoil with anger.
Her heart contracted as he moved away from her, but she couldn't blame him. She hated Rishab as much as he did but that was before he was Sanjana's brother. Being Prem's best friend brother changed things and Heer was adamant on telling Prem that.
"Sweetheart look to me," she began softly cupping his face forcing him to look at her. "I know that you don't want to talk about him but just hear me out. Please," she pleaded and breathed a sigh of relief as Prem finally gave in managing a tight-lipped smile.
Making him sit on the bed, Heer sat down beside him and took his hands in hers. "Prem you know it very well that Rishab is Sanjana's brother and whatever he did, he did it for his sister's sake'and'" Heer continued as Prem opened his mouth to interrupt.
"And I know that what he did was extremely terrible. Veera's life got in danger because of his malevolent ways and what he did with the house and our family'" she said failing to keep the disgust away from her voice when Prem interrupted.
"And what he did with you," Prem said bitterly, a vein throbbed visibly in his temple and the force of his anger emanating from his body was so strong that even Heer could feel it. Taking a deep breath, Heer continued, "Prem jo hogaya so hogaya. Har cheez ache ke liye hi hoti hai. Agar sachai na pata chalti to hamari Veera' uski zindagi tou barbaad hojati and agar Rishab se shaadi na toot thi tou Nihaal Bhaiya Veera ki zindagi mei kabhi nai aatey aur tum ajj hi dekhlo ke Veera kitni khush hai" she said looking tenderly at him trying to make him see her point.
'But what came good of what happened in Rajasthan Heer?" Prem bit out his eyes flashing as he recalled the events that had come into his knowledge, how Heer had gone through mental torture and agony on the hands of that lowly bas***d, how she had slit her wrists in order to find an excuse to avoid wearing those damn bangles.
'I found you, remember," Heer replied softly cupping his cheek and looked in his eyes until he finally tore his gaze away from her.
"Heer'" he started but she quieted him by placing her hand on his mouth. "Prem I don't want you to take Rishab out of jail because he deserves what he has gotten. I just want you to try to make his sentence short and I am not saying this because I have developed a soft corner for him or something'" Heer said and laughed as Prem rolled his eyes at her.
'Let me continue'" she pleaded and smiled as he nodded his head in defeat. "I just want this to happen so that when Sanjana gets well she has all her family members by her side, and I am sure that once Sanjana is well Rishab will realize his mistakes" she finished wishing from the core of her heart that he understood what she wanted.
Seeing him look helplessly at her as realization dawned on him of why she wanted this to happen, Prem couldn't help but feel touched by how much she cared for his best friend even though she barely knew her and also the fact that Sanjana had loved him before had never fazed her. At that moment Prem he couldn't help but feel overwhelmingly blessed and proud to have a wife like Heer because he knew that she was the best life partner for him.
Taking her hands in his he kissed each one of them and couldn't help but smile as she beamed at him and hugged him tightly.
"Thank you,' she whispered.
"No thank you for thinking so much about Sanjana's welfare," Prem interjected pulling away slightly. "I'll see what I can do," He said smiling.
"Why are you so sweet?" he asked after a while looking at her noticing the blush that appeared on her face. "I am sweet because I have you as my husband," she replied caressing his cheek.
"I adore you," Prem whispered feeling immensely pleased and kissed her on the forehead. His arms tightened around her pulling her closer to him. Placing one hand protectively over her stomach, Prem couldn't help but smile that in a matter of some months he would be a proud father of a boy or a girl.
"I want a girl first," he announced looking at her with a broad grin on his face.
"But I want a son," Heer protested folding her arms in disagreement, a small pout on her lips. "Nope it will be a girl. As for the rest of the babies we'll be having they can be boys," He said kissing the pout on her lips.
"Babies? How many are you planning exactly?" Heer asked taken aback as she looked at him forgetting her disapproval.
"You don't know?" Prem asked looking innocently at her and when she shook her head in negative her eyes speculative he muffled a laugh before answering.
"I am planning a whole cricket team Mrs. Juneja," he whispered a twinkle in his eyes as his finger lingered suggestively over her lip and laughed as Heer punched his arm and hid her face in his chest blushing profusely.
"Prem tum bhi na," She said shyly against his chest, her heart beating a hundred times faster upon hearing his plans.
"I am very much serious Madam and now its time for you to sleep," Prem said with an air of authority as he saw her stifle a yawn.
"Prem I think we should really reconsider this plan of yours," she said gravely as he picked her up in his arms heading over to her side of bed. Laying her down, he adjusted her pillow and sat down beside her.
"Why don't you go to sleep and let me do all the thinking," he murmured as she drew him closer to herself linking her arms around his neck and sealed her lips with a kiss as she opened her mouth to protest.
"Now go to sleep," he said slightly out of breath, as they broke apart.
"But I don't want to go to sleep," Heer moaned her voice husky, her hands slowly unbuttoning his shirt despite the sleep that threatened to take over.
Shaking his head at his wife's antics as he could very well see by her drooping eyelids that she would fall asleep any instant now, Prem stopped her wandering hands.
"You need to rest Honey," he said kissing her nose and grinned as she scowled back at him, which ended in a long yawn despite her efforts to show him that she was not the least bit tired. 'That's my girl," he said smiling. Kissing her eyes shut, Prem pulled the comforter over her and was about to get up when Heer stopped him. "I love you," she whispered lovingly. "I love you too," Prem replied, his eyes softening as he looked down at his love and the mother of their child. Tucking her in like a parent, Prem finally got around to changing his evening clothes. Putting his clothes on the armchair, as he was too tired to hang them up, Prem slipped in the comforter. Feeling him beside her, Heer cuddled against him welcoming his arms as he drew her closer and drifted into a peaceful sleep.
~~~~~~~~
Having changed her clothes, Meher flipped through the pages of the book which she had been reading trying her best to focus on what was written in it and not on some one specific who was always on her mind these days. Putting it away in frustration, as it wasn't as captivating as the critics had said it to be, Meher got up from the warmth of her bed and headed towards the window of her room, her walk uneasy and tensed. Preet hadn't returned to their room yet as Kiran Jiju had called him to discuss some business problem on hand as he didn't want to disturb Prem because it was big day for him.
Her heart was a nervous wreck as she couldn't help pondering over the fact that whether Preet felt the same way for her not. She was sure of the fact that their relationship had definitely changed now as she was more than a friend to him but she didn't know the most important thing that whether he loved her or not. Tucking a lock of her hair behind her ear, a small frown made its way on her forehead, as she again recalled that stupid letter and wished that she had never have found it. Everything wouldn't have been so complicated than, but she was determined to not to let those damned things mess up her relationship with Preet because she trusted him and that trust had come a long way. Looking at the clock for the tenth time which read 12 pm, Meher couldn't help breathing a sigh of relief as she heard Preet's loud chatter on the way to their room.
Feeling tense all of a sudden, she moistened her lips as her hands nervously played with her dupatta, Meher looked expectantly at the closed door to open. Her heart was beating ten times faster now as her mind tried to comprehend on how to confess her feelings to him.
As the door opened, Meher looked at Preet who stood at the doorway. Feeling jumpy she turned her back to him and took a deep breath to calm down her frenzied nerves, which were on edge at the moment.
"Preet," she said her voice uncertain, turning to look at him but stopped short as she saw him gazing at her an indescribable expression on his face. Shutting the door behind him, Preet walked up to her his eyes not leaving hers for once. He saw the way her eyes widened at first and then lower down as he cornered her against the wall.
Taking a deep breath, Meher looked up. "Preet I wanted to talk to you about something important," she said her voice firm. "I'" she started but stopped as Preet held a finger over her lips.
"Sshhhh."
"Preet I'" Meher said again her voice faltering as his breath fanned across her cheeks playing havoc on her senses. Failing miserably to focus her mind on the problem on hand, Meher gazed into his eyes loosing herself in their depth.
"I wanted to tell you something," Preet said softly. Taking her hands in his Preet kissed them. "Meher I'"
The harsh ringing of the phone made them jump out of their skin. Cursing under his breath at the worse timing of the caller as Meher looked away hastily, Preet took out his cell phone from his side pocket, glaring at it as if it had done him a great injustice.
Taking a deep breath in order to calm down, Preet said hello. Curious and a little annoyed that who was calling Preet at such a late hour, Meher looked at her husband, who was talking grimly into the phone. She noticed the way his face had lost a little bit of its color upon receiving the call but didn't voice her thoughts as she saw him smile at her a moment later. Sitting on the edge of her bed, Meher looked at her hands and her head shot up with surprise as she heard the sound of the door closing. Preet had left the room. He probably needed some privacy a voice said in her head and she couldn't help but smart a little that what was so important that he didn't want to talk about in front of her?
"Ash I cannot meet you," Preet said in a low but firm voice as he paced the hallway outside his room. Hundreds of questions ran through his mind that why did she want to meet him after all these months? Hadn't she and her good for nothing mother had done enough to make his family suffer?
Listening for a while he muttered a yes and clicked it off. His mind in a whirlwind that what was up with Ash this time, Preet headed into his room lost in thought.
Rubbing his temples Preet came inside the room barely looking at Meher as he was too preoccupied by his own thoughts. He headed towards his wardrobe to take out a change of clothes. His mind was in chaos on how to tell Meher that Ash wanted to meet him, as he knew that it would upset her immensely even though she would never express it to him. Deciding to not to worry her and meet Ash first, Preet went into the bathroom to change.
"Preet who was it? Is everything alright?" Meher asked as he came out of the bathroom. Touched by her concern, Preet told her that everything was fine and lied that he was having a headache and wanted to sleep. Surprised by his offhand attitude Meher decided to keep mum about it. Closing the lights, Meher laid down beside him, unable to go to sleep. Tomorrow I will talk to him she decided. It was after a long time when she went to sleep.
As the morning rays filtered through the chink in the curtains, Heer turned in her sleep, her hand unconsciously searching for the warmth of her husband's body. Feeling thin air, Heer groggily opened her eyes, wondering where he was. Throwing the comforter off, she stretched her arms and looked at the clock in front of her. It read 10 am. Getting off the bed, she felt the queasy feeling in her stomach return and with a low groan ran to the bathroom as the vomit came.
Coming out several minutes later, Heer unsteadily made her way towards the bed. Sitting down, her one hand on her stomach to ease the pain, she took out the salt crackers that Kuldi had left for her. Eating several of them she felt much better. Going inside the bathroom, she freshened up and changed into a pink sari. She was applying sindoor when Prem entered the room pushing a trolley of food sporting a chef's cap and a not so very clean apron. Surprised beyond belief that what was happening, Heer got up from her stool.
'Prem's what's all this?" she asked her husband who stopped in front of her giving her a big smile.
"Good morning," he said instead and taking off the filthy apron with a look of disgust on his face and pulled off his cap.
Coming up to her, he slid his arms around her and bent to kiss her lips. "How's my wife and my little one?" he asked cutely and grinned as Heer blushed.
"Both of us are completely fine as you are with us now," she answered softly. "Really?" he asked and a big grin made its way on his face. "Really," Heer replied with a giggle at his obvious pleasure and leaning up on her toes she placed a soft kiss on his nose.
Seeing Heer look over his shoulder at the trolley, Prem moved aside so she could have a better look and with one sweep of his hand and a bow, concluded.
"Breakfast is served your highness!" he announced in a deep voice imitating the accent of an English valet making Heer stifle a laugh, which bubbled in her throat at his cuteness.
Stepping closer, as the exquisite aroma of mouth watering delights wafted up her nose, Heer looked down at the trolley which was laden with an array of lavish breakfast items of which she could merely dream off. The nearest corner of the wooden tray held a small dish of straw berries with whipped cream followed by boiled eggs sprinkled with salt and pepper, the dish of cheese omelet took up the entire space of the right most corner and behind it lay a plate heaped with hot paratha's along with pancakes topped with chocolate syrup making her stomach rumble and if this wasn't enough there was also a plate of yummy Dokhlas, a bowl of sweetened yogurt, a saucer of fruit salad dressed with the likes of peaches, rasp berries, grapes, cherries and small chunks of apple and banana and to top it all of was a large glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and herbal tea.
Shaking her head, as her stomach grumbled at the sight of the things in front of her, Heer realized with a pang that she was ravenous but first she wanted to know something. Taking a look at the discarded apron and a very messy haired Prem, Heer took a good look at her husband and saw that the sleeves of his kurta were soiled with flour and if she was not wrong there was also a streak of some sticky gooey thing which went up to his shoulder.
"Prem'Prem did you make all this?" she asked bewildered unable to believe all the troubles her husband had gone through just to prepare a humongous breakfast for her. When he nodded his head happily, Heer couldn't help swallowing the lump that rose inside her and the next thing Prem knew was that his wife had burst into tears, flinging herself in his arms.
"Heer' what happened?" he asked all traces of happiness gone from his face as he held her shaking form, her head buried in his chest, terrified with the thought that she was in deep pain of some sort and needed help immediately. He was about to raise his voice to call out to Preet to take out the car and was half way through picking her up in his arms to rush out when she finally looked up at him, her eyes swimming with tears.
"What the matter sweetheart? Is it paining you?" he asked failing miserably to keep the panic out of his voice. He had to be strong for her he told himself gravely.
When Heer solemnly shook her head, her eyes boring into his trying to tell him something, Prem made her sit on the bed, half relieved by the thought that she was not in any kind of agony.
"What is it honey?" he asked gently cupping her face.
"That's' so' so sweet you," she whispered sniffing loudly.
"What'?" Prem asked confused more than ever now and handed her a hankie so that she could blow her nose.
"You did all of this for me?" she asked in a small voice looking up at him feeling much better.
As realization dawned on him of what Heer was talking about, Prem recalled Kuldi's lecture which she had given to him this morning only as he skinned the boiled eggs, to not to upset Heer in any way as pregnancy makes you quite emotional, Prem couldn't help smiling at his wife who looked up at him an adorable expression on her beautiful face. Leaning down, he kissed her tears away and kissed her softly on the lips.
"I love you, you know that?" he murmured when they broke apart minutes later making her giggle as his stubble tickled her cheek as he nuzzled her face lovingly.
"I know," Heer replied a sweet smile on her face. As her stomach protested for its demands to be fulfilled for the tenth time, Heer couldn't help licking her lips as Prem drew the trolley closer to where they sat.
"What would you like to eat first?" he asked smiling at the way her face lit up upon looking at all her favorites dishes.
And as Heer shyly nodded her head towards the fruit salad and strawberries, Prem took them out feeding everything she asked for a small smile constantly playing on his lips.
Satisfied and content, Heer let her head fall against the pillows and smacked her lips savoring the taste of chocolate pancakes in her mouth and as Prem leaned to put the empty glass back on the trolley, she pulled onto his arm making him fall right on top of her. "Thank you for everything," she whispered, her heart thudding loudly against her chest. Their gazes met and Heer felt like as if her entire being was lit up with fire. Her fingers splayed over his strong jaw, stroking his cheek'lightly fingering his stubble leaving little strokes of fire in its wake, tracing hotly against his lip. The desire to fuse her lips with his raised in her a thirst she wanted to quench, the delay in which would tear her apart with longing and yearning. She didn't know when his one hand went round her bare waist while the other went around her neck gently pulling her forward but as she raised her eyes to his a gasp escaped her lips as she took in the way his eyes burned for her. A soft moan escaped her lips as he covered her mouth with his giving in to the demands of her plea and his need. Her hands sank in his velvety hair as she responded to him, her body coming alive under his touch, searing her blood, her entire body. She tasted of chocolate and peaches, as Prem deepened the kiss making her whimper with pleasure.
A loud knock sounded at the door making them both break apart breathing heavily.
Easing himself off her, before he crushed her under his weight, Prem groaned muttering under his breath at whoever had dared to disturb them.
Heer hurriedly got up and fixed her sari which had gone askew, threading her fingers through her hair in a hurried fashion to make them look at little less messy and made her way towards the door mentally cursing at the pink tinge which she was sure was now covering her cheeks.
Taking a deep breath she opened the door praying that who ever were at the door wouldn't notice her flushed face. And her prayers were answered. It was Kuldi and as she fought Tanu to drink her milk before going to play with her dolls, she told Heer that bauji wanted to speak with them hardly looking up at her sister in law much to Heer's pleasure.
Coming down the stairs, Prem and Heer made their way to where their father sat with the pundit and the entire family.
Sitting down beside Kiran Jiju, they waited for Bauji to speak.
"Acha hua ke tum dono bhi agae," Lalit started. "Mei ne pandit ji ko shaadi ka shub mohrat nikaalne ke lye buulaya ta,aur pandit ji ne teen hafto ke baad ka mohrat diya hai," he said.
And as everyone started to protest that the time was too short and how will they prepare for two weddings in just three weeks, Gayatri quieted them all down with raising her hand.
"Sab kaam hojae ge. Akir itne sare log hai ghar mein. Mujhe tum sab pe vishwas hai ke sab kaam waqt pe hojae ge is lye chinta ki koi baath nai hai," she said with a smile.
"But ma' we still have to do loads of shopping and all the functions? How can this happen so quickly?" Veera protested.
"Why not start from today only? You girls go and buy the dresses and Kulraj and boys can help me in making the guest list," she replied.
"But Ma I also want to go shopping," Kulraj protested and grinned as Heer and Meher sided with her saying that they wont go if Kuldi wouldn't go with them.
"Pb it seems like as if we men are of no importance," Preet said dolefully to Prem who laughed at his brothers' quip and ruffled his hair.
"Ab kiya kare Preet! Yeh zamana hai hi itna zalim !" Prem declared with air of mock disbelief sneaking a look at Heer who looked back at him, her eyebrows raised.
"Kyun mei jhoot bol raha ho? Sab ko Kuldi ki jaane ki pari hai aur hum? Hamari hi shaadi hai aur hamarey bare mei koi nai soch raha hai!" he said putting on a hurt look and chuckled as Heer punched his arm rolling her eyes.
"Alright fine' enough with the emotional black mailing!" Kuldi said laughing at the pair of them. "Ab tum log itni bheek mang hi rahe ho tou tum logo ko bi le chalte hai,' she said waving her hand as if she was doing them a big favor and yelped as Preet lung at her his hands going for her throat.
Shaking with mirth Prem and Heer got up to go their room, when Lalit stopped them.
"Aap dono kaha chale? Aik aur baath abi baki hai'"
Smiling wickedly at his son who looked back at him, his eyes narrowed in suspicion of what was going on in his father's mind, Prem came to stand in front of him followed by Heer close by his side.
"Haan tou muje yeh kehna ta ke aaj k baad se Prem aur Heer aur Preet aur Meher aik saath pati patni ki tarha nahi rahe ge, dono larke guest rooms mei rahe gi" he finished and couldn't help grinning as both his sons looked at him their mouths open in disbelief.
"Ab khare khare kiya dekh rahe ho? Jao samaan bandho aur niklo apne kamro se,' he said addressing to them as if he was the military chief and they were mere sentinels.
"Bauji have you'um... Seriously lost it?" Preet whispered coming to stand behind him rubbing his ear thinking that he had not heard him right but a slap on his head told him that his ears were in high working order and his father had certainly gone mad. Only Prem stood with a smirk on his face.
"I am not leaving Heer," he said firmly and as his father looked at him his eyebrows raised he continued, "Heer is pregnant and I am not letting her out of my sight. I know Meher will be there but I want to see her in front of my eyes whenever I return home and I want to take care of her myself," he said resolutely.
As Lalit opened his mouth to protest, Gayatri stopped him, a tender smile on her face.
"You can do as you wish Prem, nobody will stop you," she said because she knew only too well that in front of her stood a father and a husband, not their son.
"Ma' aap bhi' this is so not fair' Pb aur Bhabi aik saath rahe and mein aur Meher alag alag," he said groaning loudly.
"Tou tujhe kisne kaha tha ke dair ker," Prem said in a low voice meant for only Preet to hear, rubbing his neck and Preet looked like as if he had been slapped.
"Yeh theek hai! Aap jaldi kare tou zaruri hai ke hum sab bhi kare! Aap ki kasam agar Ma pehle bata dete tou mei bi'" but a strong punch on his arm stopped him from going any further. Turning he saw a very red Meher looking at him and if eyes could kill Preet Juneja would have been died by now as everyone caught up to the meaning in Preet's words due to his loud outburst and howled with laughter.
"Pb aap ko tou mien dekh loga,' he said with a low growl and ran after Prem who ran for his life.
Trying to control her laughter Heer glanced at her sister and doubled all over again as she caught Meher flaming crimson with color before she hurried to her room followed by jeering comments from Veera and Kuldi who were going into convulsions of laughter.
Looking at the happy smiles on the faces of her children, Gayatri couldn't help wiping a tear of happiness from her eyes, praying that all would go well and they all would stay like this forever.
well thts it! i really hope u all liked it! this was a long chapter soooo long comments anyone??😆 will wait eagerly for ur feedback! take care!
