Court punishing the guilty. Nose for a nose.

Looks like a pretty fair punishment on the onset but the question remains whether a barbaric act should be punished in a similar way.

Court orders a nose for a nose

LAHORE (Pakistan) - A COURT in Pakistan's most liberal city ordered two men to have their nose and ears chopped off as punishment for inflicting similar injuries on a woman they abducted, an official said on Tuesday.

An anti-terrorism court headed by judge Khalid Naveed Dar handed down the ruling in the eastern city of Lahore on Monday, sentencing them to life in prison and fining them each 700,000 rupees (S$12,000).

'The court ordered that the nose and ears of Sher Mohammad and Ammanat Ali be chopped off as part of an Islamic punishment of a nose for a nose and ears for ears,' court official Azhar Ameen told AFP.

The men were found guilty of kidnapping a woman who had refused to marry one of them, then hacking off her nose and ears.

Pakistani courts have handed down similar punishments in the past but none were actually enacted and they are frequently revoked on appeal.

Pakistan struggles with religious conservatism. Since July 2007, Islamist militants have waged a campaign of bomb attacks killing more than 2,700 people to avenge the government's alliance in the US-led war on Al-Qaeda. -- AFP

Ah we have a real practical problem here. Agree that it does have religious connotatioins.
But here much judgement and common sense is needed.

Very well they lost their own nose and ear,but too bad they would be able to smell and hear still.

The sentence has been passed but the act may not be carried out in reality.
But in China even for certain commercial crimes the accused are put to death immediately especially where such acts could have led to the loss of lives eg. the collapse of buildings due to engineering or architectural errors.
The melamime found in milk powder was another such case too.
Misappropriation of Govt. funds could also be met with death.

it may seem barbaric

but if they were cruel enough to do that to the woman
same shud be done to them then justice is served

say for example the case is dropped on appeal then what wud the poor woman think she had the cruelty inflicted upon her

it wud be injustice if the same was not to happen to them
after all this was forced upon her so shud be done to them too
its only fair

just my thoughts on the situation in question

I think it should be carried then, you dont have the right to spoil someone else's life like that.

Death for commercial crimes.
I didnt know this.It sounds too harsh to me.

The real question to think about is - has justice been served, how so?

The woman had an unfortunate brutal crime against her. Her nose and ears were cut of by extreme vengeful men. The trial has sentenced them, but how does chopping their nose and ears add to justice? In what way will this compensate for the humiliation caused to the women? How does it ensure that she can continue to live happily in society?

If the woman was raped, should the men be raped too?
