After Fida, why did it take you six years to return to filmmaking, with Chance Pe Dance?
Did you choose dance as the film's backdrop because Kapoor is good at it ?
What are the instances that you borrowed from your real lives?
You have seen Kapoor over the years.
Working with Shahid in three films ' Ishq Vishk, Fida and now Chance Pe Dance ' has been like working with three different actors. During Ishq Vishk, he was this eager, wide-eyed boy who would go by his gut instinct since he had nothing to lose. By the time we did Fida, he had tasted a bit of success and made calculated moves. He also made mistakes and learnt from them. Today, he understands the nuances of characters and how to approach a scene. During the first schedule of Chance Pe Dance, I was bowled over by what he was delivering ' it was much better than what I had imagined. Shahid caught the look in my eyes and gave a huge smile. He was happy that he could stun me.
Why did you replace Jiah Khan with Genelia D'Souza halfway through the film?
We had started out making a very different kind of film and Jiah suited the character then. But later, we realised we needed to add another layer to the story, which is when the girl's character evolved. Jiah was not suited for it so we signed Genelia on. It sounds terrible but from a filmmaker's perspective, it doesn't matter. I'm out to make a good film and there can be no compromises. I could not have gone ahead knowing I was making a mistake and regretting it on the Friday it releases.
You also flew down Justin Timberlake's choreographer Marty Kudelka.
Since the movie has a lot of dance, Shahid suggested the moves should be fresh. So we had Marty choreograph two songs. His choreography is subtle, unlike the energetic dance we are used to. It's cool and stylish and all about attitude.
