Komolika's Yin-Yang tattoo
Urvashi Dholakia proudly shows off her tattoo, a yin-yang symbol surounded by two dolphins (her favourite animal); a step-by-step outline

Don't be surprised if you see two dolphins swimming around a Yin-Yang sign on Urvashi Dholakia's (Komolika of Kasautii Zindagi Kay) back. The actress recently got herself a coloured tattoo on her shoulder.

Group effort

"I had decided to get myself a tattoo before December last year. So I called two of my friends and all three of us wanted to go ahead with the plan. However, one of them – my close friend Shanele - chickened out at the last moment."

When asked over the choice of the design she said, "I love dolphins; they are my favourite animal. Also, the Yin-Yang sign has lot of deeper meaning; it balances the good and the bad. It is meant to give out positive energy and make one calm."

Urvashi got the tattoo done at Funky Monkey, in Bandra, and the ordeal lasted an hour-and-a-half. "I dragged my friends along, so they could help me go through the pain. All of them looked more nervous than I did," she remembers.

Pain at a cost

At a steep Rs 7,000 the tattoo didn't exactly make her mom happy. "She was definitely stunned and surprised. But she's cool with it now," Urvashi says. There were some precautions Urvashi had to take after she got the tattoo done. "I couldn't be in water for too long, and the skin takes some time to heal. But it's perfectly fine now, and I am very proud to show it off."

The actress is currently shooting for Rishton Ki Dorr, opposite Anuj Saxena.

What is Yin and Yang?

The Yin-Yang is a well-known Chinese symbol, sometimes called the Tai-Chi symbol. Tai-Chi is from the I-Ching, the greatest foundation of Chinese philosophy. Yin and Yang represent the ancient Chinese understanding of how things work.

The outer circle represents "everything", while the black and white shapes within represent the interaction of two energies, called "yin" (black) and "yang" (white), which cause everything to happen. They are not completely black or white (just as things in life are not completely black or white) and cannot exist without each other.
