Shot in a remote village 40 km from Lucknow, Forgotten Showers, produced by Sushila Bhatia and starring Nethra Raghuraman and Rajpal Yadav, has bagged the runner-up award for audience appreciation at the Leicester film festival in UK.
Nethra Raghuraman
Although the film is yet to have a theatre release, it has already been invited around the world.
Nethra is unaware about the development, as it has been a year since she finished shooting for it. "I really don't know much about what's happening with the film. I think the title has changed from Kafan to Forgotten Showers."
When asked about her shooting experience, the actress said, "I learnt a lot on the film. We shot under the most difficult circumstances. The village where we worked had no bathrooms; people would just go out in public. It was definitely not an everyday situation but I had to deal with it."
No glamour
On her de-glamourised look she said, "There is not one bit of make-up on my face. It's the most transparent look I ever had. Bhopal Express too had me in a very natural getup, but Forgotten Showers definitely crosses all boundaries." She adds that she would pad her face
with mud off the ground.
"To get the rustic Indian look, I would pick up dust off the road and smother it on my face and hair each day. It was hard, but a part of my character, so I had to do it."
Roti, kapda, makaan
The story revolves around a village struck by poverty, where people cannot afford meals for days and weeks. "I play the tall wife of a short Rajpal Yadav. The story has various sub-plots that deal with different characters. The theme is of an age-long strife to meet the basic human requirements of roti, kapda aur makaan."
Avadhi boli
The film's direction was taken over by Vinod Kumar, who reshot it and did some sound mixing before it was screened at the festival. Talking about his plans to have a worldwide release, he said, "We have used Avadhi as the prominent language in the film. We plan to have a Bhojpuri version as well, since it's set mainly in north India."
