Hi,
The term 'privacy at public places' sounds like an oxymoron. If you were in a public place, say bus stand, museum, or movie theatre, etc would you be involved private activities? ....

A knife in the hands of a butcher takes a life. Is this a reason enough to ban the knife? We must not forget that a knife in the hands of a surgeon can save a life.

Its true that if we interfere in the private life of others (by taking snaps or vdo) without their knowledge of theirs. it is a crime😊But when you are in public there is no privacy thing going on, which would be captured in camera phones. There is no logic in telling that these phones should be banned. Ofcourse, children upto 18 yrs could be restricted in using such phones in schools and colleges.

Let me start by giving some good uses -

a) One can click photo of potholes on the road and send it to the municipal council while complaining about it.

b) click someone taking bribe and send it to media for publishing in their media

c) take snap of eve teaser and send it to police for taking action.

All the gadgets would have pros and cons lets look at brighter side of it and develop positive attitude.

Believe me I think in public places we have to be more considerate of others and behave accordingly. Even in a private place where there is full public view we should exercise care and consideration.
Often in a public place we may "reserve" a certain corner for our personal use eg. at a beach etc where we are expected to behave in a proper manner (especially in Asian societies).
Littering of public places either by ourselves or our pets is also forbidden.
Likewise we cannot exercise our personal freedom in such a way as to cause offense or problem to others; mentally , physically, spiritually etc carrying an umbrella and swinging it could injure others. Inconsiderate parking could restrict traffic flow.
Looks like we should not have much privacy in public places.

People can do whatever they want, I really don't care. As long as they're not doing it to me. Take pictures of whatever you want, but taking other people's pictures without their permission is invading on their privacy. Because standing in a public place, does not make one public property.

And if the police really wanted to take action on some of these things that you mention, they would've done it a while back.

There's nothing wrong with having a camera or video on cell phones, but of course people always find a wrong way to use it. I like taking picture of flowers with mine.

Handphones ringing at meeting or in Cinema Halls is too much.
Also some people love to shout over the phones in restaurants.
And some crazy kids running and screaming in waiting areas are also too much.

A public place is any place that is a publicly owned property. That is its is a free for all area that is designated to allow equal access to everybody. Usually this is roadways, parks, bus stops, train stations, etc anything maintained and operated by the government. Unless prohibited explicitly by a National security act - photography and videography is openly permitted in these places. One need not take permission for clicking pictures of monuments or people.

It may sound alarmingly intrusive, people are not intellectual property and there is no need to take permission to photograph people. Of course it is accepted general courtesy to take permission. However, intruding privacy - like using hidden cameras or spying/eavesdropping is illegal. The camera must be clearly visible. Also using photographs for monetary purposes or publishing private information is illegal. A photographer may take a picture of people at a busstop and publish it on his site without concern. However, there are complications that may arise if someone is wearing a brand name or if someone is consuming alcohol or if two people are making out - there can be claims of infringement, publicizing a private act. If the photographer is making money of the pictrue too there can be some concerns.

Malls, movie theaters or similar places owned by a corporation are not public places. They are corporate property which public has the privilege to use. The store may have cameras all over. By entering such an establishment you are inadvertently agreeing to give up some part of your privacy for the privilege of using that facility. The owner may prohibit others from photographing in there and give others special permission. In most places restrooms, dressing rooms etc are considered private places and the owner cannot use their ownership to photograph or film people in these places. There have been several cases in the past when this was not so and store owners have installed cameras in restrooms and dressing rooms.

Nice. you should be a lawyer and prosecute a few corporates on some infringement charges.😆
