Diwali Ditties
Holi, the festival of hues, inspires hit songs in Hindi films. Coy women splashed with colours, shy cheeks drenched in gulal - Holi encourages love
banter. Ironically, Diwali, the festival of lights, doesn't stir Bollywood's lyrical imagination. Diwali songs do exist - at least 20 - but they often don't celebrate light, lamenting its absence instead ...

Song : Lakhon taare aasman mein ek magar dhunde na mila, dekh ke duniya ki Diwali dil mera chup chap jala
Film : Hariyali Aur Rasta(1962)
Manoj Kumar despairs over love in a heartless world and remarkably without covering his face. Mala Sinha too looks severely morose in this rare Diwali hit composed by Shankar Jaikishen and written by Shailendra.

Song : Ek woh bhi Diwali thi, ek yeh bhi Diwali hai
Film : Nazrana(1961)

Glumfaced Raj Kapoor, with an equally glumfaced kid on his lap, mouths this mournful track composed by Ravi and sung by Mukesh. As sparklers and anaars shower light outside, he croons: "Bahar to ujala magar dil mein andhera" .

Song : Kaise Diwali manaye hum lala, apna toh barah mahine diwala
Film : Paigham(1962)

In this era of price rise, this Rafi rendition in tel-malish style for Johnny Walker resounds with familiarity. And Pradeep's lyrics (Dhan pe hamare hai sethon ka taala) have strong class undertones too.

Song : Mere tumhare sabke liye, happy Diwali, saare sitare uske liye, happy Diwali
Film : Home Delivery (2005)

This is an upbeat Diwali track that best evokes the festive spirit.
Singer Sunidhi Chauhan (with a bunch of kids) and music directors Vishal-Shekhar make good melody.
