Salman Khan talks about his Diwali release and on why he chose to campaign actively this election
Are you happy with Wanted's success?
You know, when you're working on a film you get certain vibes and know if it's going to do well or not. I knew Wanted was going to be a success. Plus, I think it's been years since we had a proper hero. The whole idea of a hero has changed over the years and I wanted to get the original one back. The audience needed a man with a goal, a mission. A man who men and women can look up to. That is the hero that I wanted to bring back to the theatres.
And your next, Main aurr Mrs Khanna, is of a completely different genre.
Yes, this film is romantic, humorous and exciting. It is a lesson itself in romance.
What are you playing in the film?
I'm playing the "main" of Main aurr Mrs Khanna.
And what is the movie about?
Mrs Khanna is an extremely beautiful lady, the sort that everyone wants to always see very happy. So when she gets upset, you will automatically believe that her husband is a big idiot. Then you will try your best to make her happy, with all your intentions. You might try it just as a fling but then that person turns out to be so awesome that you fall in love. That is what the story is about.
You're working with a first-time director, was that a difficult decision?
Not at all. When I heard the script that Prem Soni wrote, I immediately liked it. It's written so naturally, there is no over-the-top drama. Since he's written it himself, we thought it was best that he directed it. He's done television before this and we have a great team to support him.
Was it difficult to play the character?
No, it was just acting.
Who convinced you to campaign during these elections?
It was my own decision. I called up Riteish (Deshmukh, actor) myself and told him that I wanted to campaign for his brother, Amit. I told Ashok Chavan that I want to campaign for him and went to Nanded, even though at that time Chavan was in Mumbai. All the people that I have campaigned for, I know them personally and know for sure that they will do good work.
What was your first tryst with politics?
I used to study at Scindia School. When we were really young, Madhavrao Scindia came to school and left us all completely impressed. This was 30 years ago and he landed in a chopper and spoke and left in his chopper. As a young boy, you see that and it becomes such a great inspiration. At that point, all of us decided that we want to grow up and be just like that.
So will you ever stand for elections?
No, I want to concentrate on managing my charity Being Human. I will always help candidates that I believe in.
How does Being Human work?
Everyone spends so much money on clothes. All this money goes into the pockets of rich people. So, if you have the choice of buying really good quality and well-designed clothes with a good brand and also support a cause, I'm sure people will do that. When you buy clothes from Being Human, you know it's well made and all the profits are being used for charity. After the inauguration at India Couture Week, the clothes will be available on the website and in shops soon after that.
