So there's this theory I found online... I thought it was pretty interesting....
Could Crookshanks have belonged to James and Lily?
A cat is mentioned in Lily's letter to Sirius in Book 7.
Plus, in Book 3, when Hermione bought Crookshanks, the shopkeeper told her that the cat had been there a long time and no one wanted him.
It's also interesting that Crookshanks was always after Scabbers/Peter Pettigrew, even pouncing on the rat during their first encounter in the Magical Menagerie. That was well before Crookshanks started communicating and helping Sirius Black, as revealed in Chapter 19 of Prisoner of Azkaban.

WOw thats an interesting theory!!!
Even i wondered about that....i mean sirius' theory only fit after he met the cat but what about the first meeting??? and if she really belonged to Harry's parents then she would definetly help sirius.......
So i think there may be a possiblity of her belonging to the potters once!!!

Woow, that's a really cool theory you found Chhilt! I wonder if JKR wrote it intentionally or if it was by sheer accident?😲 The theory seems to fit "too nicely" for it to be an accident though; it would explain why Crookshanks tried to leap on Scabbers the moment Ron, Harry, and Hermione entered the Magical Menagerie. Also, Crookshanks always seemed to prefer Harry over Ron (though that could be because Ron was always screaming at it😆), and cats do have long lives, so it's possible!
Thanks for sharing this with us.

"Curious. Very Curious" to quote Ollivander here. Very interesting theory. But I have to wonder - is it that it was intential or are we so obsessed with Harry Potter that we find theories and innuendos in every little Harry potter related fact. ;) But I do agree that it does fit rather nicely into the story of Crookshanks! Another layer is added to the Harry Potter world!

Also Lalitha, I think that Crookshanks liked Harry better not necessarily because of who he was, but Harry just seemed to have a better relationship with animals in general. Remember Fang always was drawn towards Harry, Hedwig is another obvious example and Buckbeak too. Wow come to think of it, Harry was an animal magnet! :D

Interesting Theory
It does seem to fit nicely but if you think about it crookshanks always tried to harm Scabbers because he knew he was an animagus but i don't think he did that to sirius(we don't know as it's not mentioned) so why would crookshanks side with sirius if he was james and lily's because both sirius and pettigrew were there friends and nobody knew sirius's truth- he says he told crookshanks he was after the rat.

Good Point. And come to think of it, Sirius never recognised Crookshanks as the Potter's long lost cat either and he would have actually know the cat!!

^^ It's possible that after twelve long years in Azkaban or simply because of one reason or another, Sirius forgot about the Potters' cat or just didn't recognise Crookshanks....
