PART-III
Days were passing by. I loved my new decision and freely shared with my friends. "You think about boys?" jeered Sri. "My Mom would kill me" said Anupama. I glared at them. "Not boys, I hate them. I am talking about my prince who will treat me just like my daddy." I smiled a little. "And don't lie to me and say you don't think about these too." I demanded. They chuckled and agreed. "Waise, I don't care about all that now. I want to be successful like my daddy. What do you want to become when you grow up.?"
Mean while two more friends, SRB and Kavitha, joined us on the compound wall of our house. "What are you discussing?" they said. "We are talking about futures and careers." I explained swinging my legs. I think it was a disease; all of us started swinging our legs. "I want to be a doctor." said Sri, "Me too." said Anupama. "I have to become an architect, no choice for Me." said Kavitha, she didn't seem to be overjoyed by the idea. "I think my mom will get me married as soon as I finish my bachelors." said SRB. "WHAT?" we were startled. "Yaar , My bua has a son who is 4 years older than me and my mom and dad are fixated on the idea of us getting married. And My bua and mom declared that I don't need to have a career." She is almost on the verge of crying. "Who thinks like that these days?" we protested.
We didn't know what to say, rest of them changed topic and said "Hey Nupur, what are your plans?" For someone who had exact plans about her future life partner, I didn't much think about my career. "Why doctor?" I asked in a vain attempt to change the topic. "Think about it Nupur. We can change the life of a person, a family. It is the profession of love, compassion and nobility." Sri and Anupama said with glistening eyes. I saw their dream. "I think I am going to be a teacher." I said. "Why become a teacher?" They asked. "Then everyone has to listen to me." I was proud of my decision. They shook their heads. We argued for next hour whose profession is better. I kept on thinking though "Really, teacher??" The more I thought about it, the doctor profession seemed more appealing.
We didn't notice we were still on the wall, swinging our legs. Some colony boys were passing by saw us and commented on us. I remembered the boy's face. He was the son of a teacher who taught in a school next to our house. Now I am fueling with anger. He had the audacity to call me names and in a split second I called him names too. I was not happy with the way I insulted him. My friends held me back. Mamma called, "Nupur, enough for today. Ask your monkey gang to go home. It is time for dinner." My friends didn't mind they are used to my Mamma. "Bye Mammagaru." they said in a singing tone.
Daddy finished looking at his file and we assembled at dinner. We always sat on the floor and ate. Our dinner usually lasted for couple of hours. That was our official round table. Daddy, Amma and Mamma were talking. "Suryanarayana's daughter joined MBBS." he said. "I think Gunjan should be a Doctor." "But Daddy, I want to become a doctor." I said. Daddy didn't respond. I looked at Akka, said "well, do you want to?" "What, BiPC. I hate cutting live animal let alone people. Please daddy, No doctor." she said softly. "May be an engineer." "But you will make a wonderful doctor Gunjan." he said. "This girl here will make her patients run in fear. She has no patience. She is ill-tempered and she shoots off her mouth. It takes a lot of composure and level headedness to treat patients. Talli." he explained. I wasn't sure whether he was making fun of me or he really didn't think I will be a good doctor. "Daddy, I can't see people in pain. I am too soft, I get worried easily and I hate blood." she said.
I jumped in" Now can you support me. I want to become a doctor." Daddy sighed "let's wait a couple of years and then decide." I was happy. Mamma said "why were you yelling at that boy?" Man…. I am so dead. I had to think fast. I said "he called me names and I was upset." Anna looked up. His face was red and I saw his left fist tightening. "Who is he?" he enquired with his jaw clenching. I told him. He finished dinner and said, "Show me who he is". "Uday" said Daddy cautiously. "No Daddy, I am just going to find out." Anna said. Well…… I have to tell you here about my Akka and Anna.
My Akka, Her name is Gunjan, She is very pretty. Slender feature, fair, long hair always neat and well kept. She is a girl of principles. She is a great singer and Dancer. She spoke very less but whenever she spoke she made total sense. I had sibling rivalry with her. But in the end she always had my back. She was very supportive of me and at times she was there to see I didn't make many mistakes. That's my sis.
My Anna, His name is Uday. He is 9 years older than I am. There is big story he would tell me when I asked him why so much age difference. Actually all my family members told the same story, that I was not a planned baby, I was an accident. I hated that. Anyway, He was tall, good complexion very well built muscles and all. He was a NCC Cadet. He wore his crisp uniform in the morning got on his cycle and went to the grounds which were 15 km from house do his full routine and come home. Most of the people in our colony thought he was a policeman. He was my ultimate savior.
So to continue my story, I showed Anna "the boy" in the morning and went to school. Little did I know what would happen that evening would turn my life in a different direction?
