| | | Supriya Pathak in Baa Bahoo aur Baby | After the exit of Instant Khichdi in October, Supriya Pathak who played Hansaben in this Star One serial kept away from the small screen.
Her character in this weekly, about a dysfunctional Gujarati family which hits the Rs 100 crore jackpot with an oil mine in their backyard, was unique in its mannerisms.
She was the most unconventional in the show's Parekh household who even used the family's private aircraft to dry papads. Exam fever
"My daughter Sanah is in Class X, and has been busy with her ICSE exam preparations. So it was like I was studying for the exams," says Pathak about her short break from the small screen.
She also has a son Ruhaan, who is younger to Sanah. However Instant Khichdi producer Jamnadas Majethia, better known as JD, in the telly world, has managed to convince her to be back on television. She now features in his Star Plus weekend show, Baa Bahoo aur Baby.
"We had approached her earlier to play the role of Baa but she did not want to commit herself for long spells of shoots at that time. Now when we were developing a track with a new character, we again thought of her," explains JD. Distinct approach
In Baa Bahoo aur Baby, Pathak plays a "phoren-returned Gujarati woman" called Gunvanti. "Obviously when people will see me they will remember Hansaben. But as Gunvanti in Baa Bahoo aur Baby, my look and gestures are extremely distinct," explains Pathak who has already begun shooting for the show at Swati Studio sets at Goregaon (East).
"I will be seen in salwar kurtas and sweaters. It is a slightly older character who still clings on to the past," says Pathak.
Adds JD, "Gunvanti is Baa's bhabhi. She owes the place where Baa and her family live. She enters the household as the maami who has returned from abroad. We've shown her as a typical NRI, she carries off her salwar suits along with her sneakers and scarves. As her character of Gunvanti is also Gujarati, there is that tinge to her but she it is different from Hansaben."
Baa Bahoo aur Baby is produced by JD, along with Aatish Kapadia, the names behind serials like Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, Instant Khichdi (both Star One) and Batliwalla House No 43, which is now Kudkudiya House No 43 (Sony).
The cast includes Sarita Joshi as Baa, Rajeev Mehta (Praful of Instant Khichdi), Rajesh Kumar (Roshesh of Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai), Devan Bhojani, Lubna Salim, Vaishali Thakker, Suchita Trivedi, Benaf Dadachanji, Kamalika Guha Thakurta and Gautam Rode. Instant Khichdi
As for the return of Instant Khichdi, JD says, "That will take some time. We are looking at doing another show for Star prior to Khichdi and one aspect of it is certain — it will not have a Gujarati backdrop," he informs. |
