I think that sort of happens everywhere. The people willing to pull stunts for publicity get big. Taking the example of Jazz, a phenomenal jazz saxophonist may never get the hype that the lead guitarist on a rock band gets. Even for all his fame Kenny G is not as recognizable as a Tom Morello or Robert Plant or Paul McCartney or Kurt Cobain.

yes in fact magicians who use all the tricks in the books has greater recognition
than a lot of real talent.
So it all boils down to amplifying and marketing whatever little talent they have.
