yes aparna, there was a show called rajani. but that about a crusading woman who took up consumer rights. i have watched the kiron kher show called Purushkshetra. It dealt with how men react to situations and they had a woman host not embarrassed to talk about sex and other taboo topics openly. but men felt far more vulnerable than women. The vulnerability of a woman has an inherent strength in it, while the vulnerability of a man has an inherent weakness in it. even though the show was telecast rather late at night, it still drew protests and kiron was asked to tone down her questions and not probe so much etc. she decided to dump the show cos no woman came forward to talk and the men did not want to admit to anything weak, her questions had to be glossed. that was the end of the show!

there was a 'priya tendulkar show'. it ran into controversies many times. it was on doordarshan so she was not given much freedom to discuss political topics. so she moved to star plus. i remember watching it on star plus. it went off air after her death.

i read about an oprah style talk show with archana puran singh coming up on some channel. don't know when.

Hey thats the" Rajni" show girl i was talking about . Wasn't Priya Tendulakar the old Rajni ? I had briefly seen her hosting this show and i found her bold and very good . Such a pity that these shows were taken off air !!

Well i guess then you may b right . India isn't ready for Oprah !!😔

it didn't go off air because of controversies. priya tendulkar passed away due to cancer. it was a bold show. though her political views were tilted towards shiv sena which invited some criticism still it tacked so many major issues of that time.

it had a discussion on babri masjid-ram janmbhoolmi- budha statue demolition in afganisthan. so she invited one top leader from each religion. it was a heated debate. there were also debates on eunuchs in politics, same sex marriages, kini case etc.

i think india is very much ready for such shows. why not? yes! doordarshan has limitations but not private channels. if i have to rate then i would say priya's show was better than oprah. i prefer debates to oprah's soap opera dramas.

'priya tendulakar show' was a success. we also had desi version of america's most wanted. it was a huge hit and helped to nab many crminals. only that anchor guy was later framed in a scandal but now he is free.

have you guys watched 'hard talk india' on BBC, debates headed by rajdeep sardesai. didn't they have huge audience?

I think one shouldnt brand the show as for particularly something unless its a serious show with a journalistic approach on a channel like maybe NDTV. If you are catering to the average woman in india on an entertainment channel like Star Plus your audience is the average person.

Talk show has to be casual and fun not serious and lecture like. Show hosts must not only deal with sexual abuse and does your husband beat you issues- they can also talk about money, beauty, fashion, cooking everything under the sun that someone thinks about in everyday life.

Among the serious topics like divorces and such mingle in some shows that are more fun. Like what do I cook today, my husband likes baingan ka bharta and my son likes bagara baingan, how do I teach them to be more compromising. There will be so many callers crying their hearts out about their families who dont understand how hard it is to make three kinds of curries with one baingan.
Once you gain their trust then the seriousness can kick in. Dont shoo them away even before you bring them in.

Talk with the people like you are chatting with them. Dont make them sit there and ask them 200 questions, its not an interview.

Yes , we can't have some one very bold and saying things in an outrageous manner . Since Indians are highly senstive , emotional , hypocritical , holier than thou attitude often ...................i suppose it will have to be a charismatic woman with Indian senstivity !!

i kno thats one of the greatest problems ever!ppl here are so sensitive and they just refuse to open up...i dont think they like experimenting too...ya and if our indian oprah lets slip something that is true but maybe not accepted by the 'masses' then had it for her.....

aparna then most subjects like rape, domestic violence, sex change in one twin (i saw that episode last night)men/women leading double lives etc will all become either a sensational issue or something tame and mild. remember the public is watching! the hypocritical holier than thou attitude will never permit us to reveal anything let alone attack the root cause of the problem so we can handle it!

👏 nicely put!

Yeah well said and average person is happy with the saas bhau soaps, they want entertainment that makes them laugh, cry and all kinds of things in 30 secs. About NDTV they have several great progms and I enjoy the journalistic approach coz it is closer to reality.
As a naion we are hypocrites as aparna said and even Jayalalitha did not come in support of Kushboo. imagine the lady was acting as though what Kushboo said was so out of place in this lily white puritan society of ours. May be she forgot MGR. well Oprah is good for an American society but if u want to come up with such shows in India they need to let the host win the confidence of the people and not preach and talk down that is what happened with most hosts, even Smiriti Irani did one.
Bharka dutt is a journalist unlike celeb anchors who we see every where, her stories appeal straight to the heart and it is the common man, woman that is her inspiration not the dumb page 3ites who do not even know why Jan 26 is imp to India.
