It was a dare bare day yesterday. The only threat to everybody, Nihira was out, and it was very difficult for everyone to keep their emotions under wraps, I am sorry they did not even try! With a heavy heart, I watched the demons of human nature, popping their heads up time and again in yesterday's qawali round. ID was completely dejected and simmering inside. Understandable. His heart was not in the show. He was badly trying to comprehend, how could the public vote out Nihira in favor of all these. He was cynically doling out 10 after 10, as a challenge to AS and HR , to do the same for Debo. And boy, did they bite the bait, and how!!!As we know, AS has not tasted success in a long time, so yesterday was his big day. His comparatively untrained Himani had beaten ID's superbly trained and talented Nihira. He had that tremendous glow of self-satisfaction and mostly a smirk directed towards ID. His going down on his knee and suro ki rani was to spite ID. HR, I must say I have come to like him over AS, is the most consistent person on the show. He never surprises you nor does he let you down. All eyes, all ears for Vinit only. Now about the contestants. Guys, Hema's body language has changed. Gone is the humble please-vote-for-me stance. What has replaced is vote-for-me-I-am-the-best. Himani was having a field day. Well, the mice tend to play when the cat is away. Her jhatkas and matkas in aye meri zohara jabi.. were totally uncalled for. But her performance was good. Vinit, like HR is completely predictable. His parda hai would have brought down the house in any college annual function, but honestly, not up to mark. Not bcz he could not copy the inimitable Rafi Saab, but bcz on its own it was sometimes besur. Coming to Debo, my heart goes out to him. He and his mentor, both are simpletons as compared to other shanas that are afflicting this show. Everybody has a very condescending way of looking at him. His coming from small town of Assam, his regional vote bank are much hyped. It's a psychological battle. The complete disbelief with which AS and HR look, when Debo is performing, says, "how has this guy come so far?" Then they dole out their patronizing 4s, 6s, and 7s. AS's Debo is not a bura singer, was pathetic rather than cheap. Please hear what we have to say about you, Mr. As. ID is fantabulous, HR is successful, what are you? As for Debo's performance, well, his voice cracked at places, but singing this qawali is not a joke. The original has been sung by at least 5 main singers simultaneously, so it is multilayered, with a continuous chorus to back it up. Amongst all things, Debo took, 3 very difficult tans perfectly, in tandem with the speed, in an unhalting rhythm. And he was in sur all the time. His performance demanded a 8, plus one for his courage. But we know, HR and especially AS lack this very same courage. It takes guts to praise somebody from a different gharana. ID had that. I could just imagine Nihira singing Asha's magnificent nigahen milane ko ji chahata hai. Debo getting highest number of votes this week does not come as a surprise. But if his big moment is being tainted with references to terrorism, I am sorry to say, the rest of them were never the winners as it is, but they are neither graceful losers!!!!!
