It's unfair to compare Deepika with Kareena, says Saif

Rohit Khilnani / CNN-IBN

A PROUD PRODUCER: Saif says producing a movie taught him the importance of budgeting.

Actor Saif Ali Khan debut as a producer Love Aaj Kal hit the screen last Friday (July 31). Though movie has earned mixed reviews from viewers, it has definitely made a mark at the box office.

CNN-IBN's Rohit Khilnani talks to Saif about the movie and his future plans.

Here is an excerpt from the interview -

Rohit Khilnani: You must have learnt so many things after producing Love Aaj Kal , is there something you feel you could have done in a different way?

Saif Ali Khan: There are two major things that I have learnt. First one is the importance of budgeting and the second thing is choosing the right director to work with.

Rohit Khilnani: When I am talking to other actors they are telling me that Saif is choosing his directors very carefully and smartly.

Saif Ali Khan: I think there aren't so many directors to work with. Sriram Raghavan is the next director I am excited to work with next and Imtiaz was a fantastic experience.

Rohit Khilnani: I was trying for an interview with your mother (Sharmila Tagore) the other day but she said she is going to watch Love Aaj Kal. Tell us what did she say?

Saif Ali Khan: She is liking my work of late. For the last two years she has been very supportive and she was happy watching Love Aaj Kal.

Rohit Khilnani: Professionally, Deepika has worked wonders in the film but personally any point did you feel that Kareena could have been in the film and this scene she would have done a great job?

Saif Ali Khan: I think it is unfair to compare like this. Deepika is new and she has done remarkably well in the film. Kareena is on another level as an actor so there are many things she would have done differently.

Here's the video of the interview.
Saif is much sweeter towards Deepika in the video coz he also says we're very proud of her, and the print interview doesnt have that part

Bad answer..Answer must have been Deepika has done well in the film and STOP with that. There was no need to say that Kareena could have done things differently esp when the movie is out and running. Very unprofessional...

its true tho...sumtimes we hate these actors for being diplomatic and just saying wat ppl want to hear, and not speaking their mind....and wen they do, we say they arent professional...

he didnt say anything wrong about deepika, he said she did well and she is new so she shudnt be compared to kareena, who is on a different level....wats so unprofessional in that?

I work in an office..A job is well done by me. I would hate it if my boss announces in a gathering that I did the job well. But..I cannot be compared to Ms. X as she is much better and in a different league and would have done things differently. He should realise Deepika has done the movie..so theres no point in saying kareena would have done stuff differently as shes in a completely different range and all that.

Theres a way of saying what you want to say and that is not being diplomatic..this is being professional.

Nothing unprofessional about it. He said kareena woudl have done things differently. That's completley fine. Its the question that was unproffesional if anything, and saif handled it well.
Everything that saif says is scrutinized to the max.

its ok desigal, hes an actor and hes bound to be scrutinized as this is a bollywood forum. but getting to the point, i dont think there's really anything wrong with what he said because members here say it all the time...unfair to compare two actresses because the experience level varies, and this is exactly what saif was implying. unfair to compare them because kareena is more experienced whereas deepika is new.
p.s. did the format of india-forums change because my whole page is white. yikes~!

Btw, here's the video! Watch how he says it! Laly, I'm sure you'll be satisfied coz the print interview cut out the part he goes, "And we're very proud of her" and he adds kareena in at the very end. Just Watch this

but the interviewer had asked the question about kareena...he didnt bring her up...
if sum1 in that gathering was to ask ur boss about Ms. X in comparison to u....im sure ur boss wudnt just praise u and completely ignore Ms. X, who is more experienced...he wud have to answer the part about Ms. X as well...without putting u down....no?? i wud hate to be in Ms. X's position if he ignored me after being asked about...now that wud be unprofessional...

i don't think there's anything wrong in what he said......he was asked a direct question whether he felt Kareena would have done a better job. He had to be fair towards both the girls.....and IMO this was the best answer he could have given.

i think the question itself was unfair......but thats media for you....its their job to rake up controversies....🤔

You got it right Swan20!
Saif's learning slowly what it takes to be a producer and I think he's getting there. I wish him even more success with all his coming projects.
And his choice of directors is veyr interesting. He's nto just working with anyone.
Imtiaz was the first, Sriram (Ek Haseena Thi, Johnny Gaddar) is next.
I wonder who he'll pick for this third. I have a feeling he's honing in on Vishal Bharadwaj! I hope he does!
Woudl love to see Saif and Vishal working together once more after Omkara!
