New Delhi: In what is seen as a clear violation of protocol, an insult to former president APJ Abdul Kalam was frisked as he was asked to remove his shoes for checks by an international airline at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport recently, reports said on Tuesday.

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam was treated as a commoner as he was frisked by the ground staff of Continental Airlines at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) on April 24, 2009 at the insistence of the company's American boss. The former President was on his way to Newark on Continental Airlines Flight CO 083.

----------

Throw this airlines out of India. India is a good market so let them first learn to respect people who form the market or close down there shop and go. But more crucial is during this ruckus US has quietly signed an end user's agreement along with the defense pact which will let them sell arms to us and will help them decide how we use it. Though the arms that they would sell (F18) is also available with over 5 more vendors who do not have such rules still we are subjected to this end user's agreement. UPA government is selling India's interest wholesale with the only murky thing being at what cost.

to all the people pro continental. remember one thing. continental airlines is given a set of guidelines, before they operate in india. and respecting our highest civilian is one of them. if they think, they are byond the laws of the land. they should not operate in India. now stop licking continental and stand besides an Indian....
after 60 years of independence our mentality remain of slavery..bow down to the power. American (airlines) would never do this in China or may be even in SriLanka..
If we dont respect ourselves nobody will...

I don't think there should be a problem with this. Were others, if there were others on the flight, checked the same way? If they were, then he should also be checked in that manner. Was he not elected into office because he could represent the commoner? Then what is the issue with him being treated as a commoner?

Also, people do tend to change. If men/women in office can be bribed into completing tasks that threaten the country's stability, then APJ is an ex-official, and can equally be suspected.

However, if this is more of a religious issue...if they checked him due to his religion, then it was defenitely wrong! However, the article doesn't really highlight that point. So I honestly don't find it insulting.

Dude, he wasn't asked to strip for a drug check or something. My mum has been asked to remove her shoes for a general check too. If AK has taken no offence what so ever then why should you? :S
Not all politicians are saints my friend and they should all be searched. even PM MMS for that matter! People constantly go on about how corrupt our politicians are right? So when they are being checked then let them be checked and let them prove their status of a common man just like all of us!
We constantly rant about how there should be equal treatment between the common man and any 'celebrity/politician' and when things like this happen then the 'aam janta/fans' get upset! Don't forget, most o f these politicians live the lifestyle they do all thanks to the taxpayer! So asking for a random check is nothing.

And MMS isn't president of India, he's the PM.

Oops, my research on Obama for my history project seems to have got to me O_O lol

I was unaware of that law but it sounds absurd. No-one should be excluded from a security check. Who knows what path one takes after (or for that matter during) they've played their roles in politics. Hell even David Cameron as a kid took drugs, I would love him as PM but who knows what he does in his personal life? Security is of utmost importance,(atleast for me!) ESPECIALLY after the recent turn of events in the country.

No insult. Just procedures. No one should receive exceptions. It is not the airlines fault either. They just follow what the procedures are.

On a lighter note - Once at Newark I had to take off my shoes at the checkpoint. I was lazy and picked them by the strings and started walking in my socks. The guard followed me and said I had to wear my shoes again. Even though it passed inspection it apparently is not safe in my hands, but on my feet its fine.

When we see something different we forget all logics and reasoning. We just want it back to what we are used to i guess😆

Mr.Kalam rather this issue is about the attitude of Westerners as a whole. If they can be rude to the former President of India ,then imagine the fate of millions of Indians who face the ire of rudeness by search narrow minded officials.

Abdul kalam was not only the President but an esteemed and well respected sceincetist. Its so sad that in India a politician with criminal backround is treated like a king by poilce and govt officials. In india its all about political power and money...
People like President and PM are exception from any rules.
First of all fire that Airport Manager and ban continental airlines to India.
Now this high profile case will keep hanging there like Kasab's case. Nothing will happen though former indian president was insulted....😊
This is an oppurtunity for the Govt of India to redeem itself. It will prove of point if they suspend the services of Continental airlines for say a month. Doing such a thing esp when the issue is fresh in teh world media will send a strong signal to people who take Indians and Govt protocols lightly.😳
India will remain a third world poverty stricken country till we start respecting our heroes past and present irrespective of their political affiliations. Because great nations are built by heroes, and a nation which does not treat its heroes well, DOES not deserve them.

SORRY, Dr. Kalam Sir, India does not deserve you.😕

woo. u r quiet furious abt this matter. well i think its had nothing to do with security its was more a matter of religion and also the fact that he belonged to india. and what believe said in the bolded part is true. these things r purposely done by westerners. they think all white skinned r saints and VIP and others r either terrorists or beggars.( mind u i am not saying ALL are like that but then u do get some morons and they should be taught a lesson.) would they take i this lightly only if hilaary clinton was treated this same way in india? in fact i think she should also have been treated the same way.
