Both Ramji and Sitaji were the embodiments of sacrifice and love, and if we all follow their example even 5%, the world would be a much more peaceful happier place.
Just as Ramji was the ideal man, Sitaji was also the ideal woman because she did not go against Ram's decision knowing it to be true. She too had full trust in Ram and knew that her husband loved her and had full trust in her more than anyone else. But the Ayodhyavasis, no matter how narrow-minded or cruel they were, were still the children of Ram and Sita because Ramji and Sitaji were their King and Queen. Most politicians today would not give a care what us people think, at least not to the extent of Ram and Sita, but Ram and Sita cared for every small detail of their praja's happiness to the extent of sacrificing their own happiness. Even their kids were impacted by this, but it was necessary to teach all of us the rules of an ideal ruler, ideal husband/wife, etc.
I don't think people today are any better than the Ayodhyavasis were. Sure, most aren't narrow-minded (though I'm doubtful about that as well), but people today are so much worse in other ways. The fact is that there will always be people like that, no matter if it's Treta Yuga or Kali Yuga. We should learn the morals of Ramayan and try to live them to the best of our abilities.
