Do you think ignorance is the root of all the prejudices in the world (maybe not all but most of them)
1. Some people who are against homosexuality are ignorant of most facts pertaining to it? (like they would know if they were experiencing it)
2. People who diss or ridicule some one else's religious views are ignorant about the deeper meaning of it? (since they had not gone through that upbringing?)
3. People who make national comparisons (I have seen that in the western view generally the eastern countries are always referred to as under developed etc. etc. and everyday the commercials keep on coming 'adopt a poor kid' in these countries, I agree Poverty is bitter truth BUT that in itself is not India!) But due to ignorance, this label is given.
4. Every time I hear someone say Astrology and Numerology are BS, later I find that they havn't studied it or don't know as much about it (i.e. they are ignorant about it)
But I do know that, at the end of the day, we humans are not computers and our opinions are NOT 100% based on logic and information, we are emotional people and our emotions WILL, knowingly or unknowingly creep in to our jugements and opinions, no matter how much a person pretends to be unbiased.
So is ignorance the root of all prejudice?

I wud say that its not ignorance since every human being is bound to B ignorant in some field but rather unwillingness to even consider an alternative opinion that is the root cause of all prejudice !

lolz, if you mean to say that I am talking about others or that these examples are my prejudices, then let me make it clear they aren't😉I am genuinely stating a concern: that I do think prejudice stem from lack of knowledge and glad that you agree.😛

Prejudice and ignorance are in the eye of the beholder, people go out of the way to call others names just to prove their ignorance😉

Is ignorance the root of all prejudices?

Not necessarily so.

There are plenty of people, who, (for whatever reason it might be), feels a physical hatred towards other people, just because they do not belong to the same group as them, or that they do not adhere to the same opinions regarding the world as they do. I do not think there is anything to be 'ignorant' about Black people being equal to the White people, women being equal to men, or about gays being equal to straights. Prejudices exist simply because some people are so close-minded and intolerant of their fellow human beings, that they cannot even bother the idea of anything/one being into a different group/sect from the one they are, and apparently starts to form an irrational hatred towards them. They even start justifying those hatred, by using some extremely ridiculous, absurd, ludicrous and bizarre excuses. Some even go as far as to drag their religion/God into the account, just to justify their own hatred, and find a excuse to torture fellow human beings; God/Religion on your side can be a mighty weapon, it could be used whichever way you want it to be used. Just a few days ago, I heard a great quote, (which incidentally is still ringing in my ears, making my blood boil down): "I don't hate fags, God hate fags". Utter madness.

There is also a thing called 'willful ignorance', which literally means to willfully and consciously remain ignorant and biased, even when you know it full well that your prejudices are simply based on no real facts, but purely and solely on your own hatred regarding it, and nothing else. So, yes, willful ignorance must be the true cause of all prejudices, and looking around the world, one can easily see that ninety-percent of the prejudices the world has to offer (be it racism, sexism, or homophobia) are based on nothing but solely on willful ignorance.

The world would be a way happier place that day when people around us will come to realize that each and every single soul in this world is equal, in all respect, and every life is precious. That day no one will be treated like a slave, animal or even worse, no one will be taken into prison on the middle of the night, no one will be killed, or tortured inhumanly, no one will be forced to drown himself and end up his life simply for prejudices and discriminations they had to face on the society on the basis of their sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious/political/social views, race, ethnicity or anything as such. I have a dream, a dream that one day we will all be accepted (legally, socially, and in every way), and people who hates us will come to realize their mistake, and see how precious every single life is.

Nice topic, by the way, Khooshboo. A very favo[u]rite subject of mine, and something which (as far as I am aware of) had not been introduced in the DM section before.

Most of the sociopolitical hatemongers , hitler and dictators were hardly ignorant.. Power is the single most enabler for prejudices.

First of all, excellent points Labib! Made me see the entire thing in a much broader sense👏
The particular reason I had the word 'ignorance' stuck in my head was
1. There are a few generalizations that are used to counter against any religion. An incident had recently occured in my Uni, the whole 'My religion is better' fight, there were a few people who really wanted everything to go peacefully, they tried to intervene in the best way possible, name-calling etc. ensued by the not so nice parties and when I asked them if they had read any religious text of the opposite religion, both sides said No. Then what gave them the right to criticise something they havn't even READ or TRIED to understand in the first place? The reason for the topic in the first place.
Although after reading your reply, I am convinced the actual reason is wariness something different than the person's own convention. Like they say, every new /different idea since ages has to go through three phases: 1) Ridicule 2) Vehement opposition 3) Grudging acceptance.
Yes, with you on the willful ignorance part, I was being too kind on them, innit, not everyone is ignorant! Truly insightful post.

Awesome replies everyone, truly makes me feel better in my times when I go "Why discrimination? What to does someone get by disputing or questioning someone else's lifestyle, their choices or in what religion, or race they are BORN!!"
