Smita's agony began in September last year, when she developed lumps all over her body. She says, "Initially, I thought they were warts. So I didn't pay much attention. But slowly as they grew in size, I had to seek medical help." Smita's world came crashing down when the doctors diagnosed her with skin cancer. "I almost fainted. I got myself admitted to a hospital. My mother fractured her arm around the same time and my dad had to stay with her to nurse her. My parents are based in Lucknow, I had to look after myself. I was hospitalised for three months. I don't know how I regrouped myself," she adds. Fighting the disease along with the punishing treatment was rather painful. "Initially, I tried acupuncture. The needle pain was unbearable. Chemotherapy was no less agonising." However, life is looking better for her now. Smita got back to work in April. "I am playing a character called Poonpoonwali in Bhagya Vidhata." "There is always light at the end of a dark tunnel," she concludes on a philosophical note. |
