When it came to scripts, the trend deflected towards unusual and youthful themes on television. Reality shows were a hit but their future cannot be predicted. Game shows with different concepts allowed the audience to reap huge rewards. Comedies also made a huge comeback and shows like Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai and Instant Khichdi, both from the stable of Hats Off Productions, won audiences' hearts. Here's a lowdown on the shows that dominated year 2005. Game shows Kaun Banega Crorepati's launch a few years back created a history of sorts, and sent game show TRPs rocketing in the sky. The trend continued this year with a host of interesting game shows including Kaun Banega Crorepati – 2. Channels came up with new ideas that left the audience richer by a few millions. Presenting a recap of the game shows that hit the television screens this year. Kaun Banega Crorepati – 2 Amitabh Bachchan returned with his old charm and a revamped wardrobe in KBC - 2. With Umeed se dugna as its catch line, the prize money doubled to Rs 2 crore but there has been just one person who could reach the Rs 1 crore level. Big B's illness notwithstanding, KBC – 2 has its loyal audience who vouch for the fact that this was the show that started it all. Super Sale This show, dubbed "Har sale ka baap" by its host Sajid Khan managed to hold viewer interest. A change in the time slot notwithstanding, Super Sale tested the contestants' intelligence as well as alertness. Films dominated a major part of the show. However, general knowledge questions also made for a noticeable element. Deal Ya No Deal Madhavan returned to the telly world with this adopted format of a game show that rocked 43 countries. Though it has been criticised as a show based on pure gamble which doesn't test the intelligence and knowledge of participants, DYND has tried to achieve a balance by having coolies as well as celebrities on the show. Madhavan is also being appreciated for his natural performance on the show. Kam Ya Zyada The show marked Manoj Bajpai's foray into television, but it looks like he is not really comfortable with his telly act. KYZ has tried to bring in audience interaction by offering nearly half the prize money (Rs 1.5 crores) to viewers sitting at home. Earlier offered to superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Kam Ya Zyada, it seems will take 'zyada' time to get popular with the audience! Reality shows It all started with Indian Idol and the trend of reality shows really caught on with the television audience. Touted as 'the shows' which reveal the real face of their participants, nearly every channel came up with its own version. Here's presenting the ones that made an impact in 2005. Fame Gurukul The show that made stars out of the Kashmiri Qazi and the Bengali Ruprekha was different in the sense that it got the contestants to live together in a college-like setting with Ila Arun as its strict headmistress. Not as huge as Indian Idol, the show followed up with a celeb edition of Fame Gurukul called Celebrity Fame Gurukul. |
