STUPID STRIKE! It was no good! They didnt come to a conclusion, argh!
Now the movies will release in single screens, and not multiplexes. Great. This is horrible news for movies like Kambakkht Ishq, My Name is Khan, and 3 Idiots, and pretty much all the big budget movies
'Yes' to single screens, 'No' to plexes

By Taran Adarsh, May 7, 2009 - 08:16 IST

The decision by film producers and distributors -- to release films in single screens and independent multiplexes -- has come as a big surprise. Everyone was hoping that the final discussions with multiplexes on Tuesday would end on a positive note, with the stalemate coming to an end. But...

Okay, now let's look forward. The producers and distributors are going to announce the release schedule of forthcoming films in the next 10 days and hopefully, by May last week or June first week, the flow of releases should begin again, at single screens and independent multiplexes only.

Most of us have cultivated a habit of visiting the nearest multiplex to catch a movie, over the years. In metros especially, a lot of us have actually lost the habit of visiting a single screen. The question is, will we rush to catch the film at a single screen with equal fervour?

I feel, most of us will visit only those single screens where the A.C. is functioning well, the sound system is perfect, the projection quality is impeccable, the overall environment is hygienic and yes, the crowd that visits the theatre is classy.

For the producers -- those involved in 30, 40, 50 and 60 + crore mega-ventures -- the decision to release the film at single screens is going to be tough. You can't shut your eyes to the fact that multiplexes contribute enormously to the booty and given the current stalemate, these makers would've to rely on single screens to recoup their investment.

But the worst hit would be multiplexes. The fixed expenditure -- monthly rents, monthly wages, electricity bills, maintenance costs -- will have to be paid, whether or not films play at their property. How will they manage the show if they are boycotted?

Here's a humble request. Let's set our elephantine egos aside and come to a consensus asap.

Wait so all the forthcoming movies are gonna release in single screens? That sucks! Single screen theatres are nasty in India, nobody is gonna go watch the movies! They will all suffer from loses!

I can just imagine a family saying, hey, Kambakkht IShq is out, havent seen a movie in so long, wanna check it out? Oh wait, its not playing in the multiplex, oh well. Lets wait for it to come out on DVD then.

in pakistan there were hardly any cinemas earlier but thx to indian movies new cinemas r opening now...this shows that cinemas are dependent on movies...more the good quality movies more the cinemas....its a tragedy that despite soo many great indian movies in line the multiplexes are not ready to agree to the terms...its there loss completely..n its jst soo silly...

koiza, but it's different naa.. true, multiplexes depend on the movies.. but when i think about it, both will suffer but in the long run, it'll be the producers who will suffer most.. india has a huge market and most people would not go to single screen theatres to watch a movie.. who would..
and with some of the crappy movies they are making nowadays, how can multiplexes be blamed..? why would they share the profit if the theatre is not even house full..?? running the movie costs them money too, so they would at least want to recover that cost..!

please call me sanam..
it's too bad the producers are not willing to budge either.. quite a shame.. last article i read, the multiplexes had offered 50,40,30 %... but seems like there was no settlement..
