Is democracy the best political system?

By the end of the 20th century, it has become well established that democracy is the the best political system. The UN, human rights bodies, and political activists around the world repeated the mantra of "the need for democratic reform". In the US it even went further: the use of military power to spread democracy.

One of the reasons for the popularity of democracy has been its association with freedom, individual freedoms in particular. But a closer look reveals that this association is not entirely true:
In any given country, the majority could vote to erode personal freedom. This has happened time and time again, the most latest was within the framework of the war on terror.

Democracy is, at the end of the day, the dictatorship of the majority.

Some may say that democracy is the best available system.

Isn't there a way to invent an better system?

IMHO NO!

People were all crazy and misguided and stuff and in a lot of shizzle, so they decided hey why not all of us choose a leader. Thats fair eh. And everyone said yeah! Caveat, is people are still crazy and misguided and stuff, how are they to pick a leader who is not?

When one person takes charge and commands a whole nation of different people to listen, that person is obviously smart, charismatic and deserving to be the leader.

You pick what you like - one smart person shrewdly taking over or people like batty old ladies, loud obnoxious frat boys, whiny weasels, psycho octuplet moms getting a say in choosing who should lead.

what if in a majority decides that a certain minority should be disallowed certain rights, or even banned from the country, or maybe exterminated?

the majority may be happy about that, but is it what should be considered?
