Does anyone even care if Indian heroines go west? Keeping the media hype aside, we take a look at nine women who went across the border. Turns out that while half of them don't even evoke a yawn, others inspire an awe! Buzz18
If rumours are to be believed, Freida Pinto almost got married and settled into a comfy suburban Mumbai home. But then Slumdog Millionaire happened and Freida suddenly became a phenomenon! On the covers of glossy magazines to the Academy Awards to fashion weeks across the world, Freida Pinto was at every place she hadn't even dreamt of! And to think that Slumdog... almost had a direct-to-DVD release! Lucky girl, what else can we say?
Aishwarya RaiBachchan may not have had overnight fame as Freida. It has been a long and daunting path after her Miss World victory. From a violent boyfriend to an immature one, Aishwarya has charted her career with much labour. The Last Leigon (in picture) was one of her initial projects in the West. And now it's Pink Panther 2. Okay so she doesn't have such a prominent role in it but we don't know of too many Indian movie critics writing for the papers in the West either! Aishwarya RaiBachchan - Thumbs up!
Not sure if this one is called Karma Aur Holi or Karma Confessions and Holi. Either way, just having Naomi Campbell in the cast doesn't necessarily make an Indian film a Holly flick (as it is being made out to be). Either way we're definitely going to watch it, even if it is to trash it later on! C'mon Sush give us another Main Hoon Na and trust us we'll be drooling our way to the cinema halls just for you.
Shilpa Shetty's The Desire – A Journey of a Woman is supposed to be an Indo-Chinese venture. So technically it's not really West. But the sexy gal who struck gold after Big Brother in the UK, definitely deserves a mention in this list. We're giving her a thumbs up - not so much for bagging an 'international' project but rather for how she has managed to stay in the news despite doing almost no movies after her win.Shilpa Shetty - Thumbs up!
Celina Jaitley's latest film is called Love Has No Language. Funnily (if reports are to be believed) the actress had to undergo some sort of special training in a Kiwi-Australian accent. The story is about a Kiwi-Aussie boy (Ben Mitchell) who falls for the Indian girl (with a Kiwi-Australian accent) and how the girl doesn't want to get married to the boy of her parents' choice... who as it turns out is GAY! How original is THAT!?!
Trust Mallika Sherawat to make a mountain out of a molehill. A bit appearance in a little-known Jackie Chan film called The Myth Mallika ensured that everyone was talking about it. Mallika did almost nothing noteworthy ever since, though occasionally she's managed to make a little noise here and there to ensure people don't forget her.
Ayesha Dharker's many crossover ventures may not have even seen the light of the day in India. But here's someone who has managed to make her presence felt in the West. And though she doesn't necessarily figure in the 'top bracket' and occasionaly does some silly films like Outsourced, we can't help appreciate her screen presence and persistence.Ayesha Dharker - Thumbs up!
Like it or not, there is much more to Lisa Ray than the red swimsuit on the Gladrags cover. Possibly because of her lack of knowledge in Hindi, Lisa never really managed to carve a niche in Bollywood. But with at least half a dozen projects in the west of some substance Lisa Ray certainly deserves an applause if not a standing ovation. Lisa Ray - Thumbs up!
Persis Khambatta was westward bound long before any of these women were even born. Back in 1965 she won the Miss India crown and went on to carve her niche in the West. Her best-known role in an English language film was that of Lieutenant Ilia, in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Said to have dated the likes of Sly Stallone and Henry Kissinger among others Persis was also the first Indian citizen to present an Academy Award back in 1979! Persis Khambatta - Thumbs up!
