Dil Ka Chor
Ek aur Piyo(Swati)
One Night
Dil Ka Chor
Jai Walia walked into the museum dressed just like a tourist, shorts, t-shirt, cap and a raggedy packback. He made straight for the Mogul Gallery. It was packed, after all the new exhibition displaying the mogul paintings from various royal houses had just opened. But he was interested in only one paining'the painting of Mumtaz'a portrait of the famed Queen not been seen before, a buyer was willing to pay a several millions in US dollar to get it.
Pretending to be interested in seeing the works, Jai walked around looking at the exhibition, until he reached his target. He took out his camera to take a shot, but a security guard stopped him, "No photography allowed sir." Jai shrugged and tucked his camera away.
"Beautiful'wasn't she?" a soft female voice asked close to him.
Jai Walia turned and looked at the young woman dressed in a flowing long black skirt and a garishly embroidered kurta top. Her long hair had been pulled back from her face and her sunglasses perched on top of her head. She smiled at him. Jai returned the smile'she had a beautiful smile he noted.
"Yes she was. No wonder the Shah Jahan was moved to build the Taj for her." Jai replied, somewhat dreamily.
"You deal in art sir? By the way my name is Bani." She held out an immaculately manicured hand towards him, the nails painted bright red.
"Jai'no I am just an amateur'just like beautiful works of art." Jai replied, shaking her soft hand.
"Do you want to go for coffee afterwards?" Bani asked.
Jai arched his brow at her in surprise, not many woman invited men for coffee. He nodded, "Yes. I am just about done. Let me know when you want to go."
Bani tucked her arm through his, "I am done too. Too many people today, I think I will come back when it's quiet."
They walked out of the museum and Jai walked with her to a coffee bar few building down the road. She seemed familiar with the area he noted. They took a seat at an empty table and gave their ordered. He smiled, she had a sweet tooth, white chocolate frappuccino and a slice of chocolate cake.
"So Jai'what do you do in life?" Bani asked relaxing back in her chair.
"Nothing much at the moment. I freelance for an art magazine. Was thinking of doing an article on the Mogul art, that's why I went to the museum. What about you?"
"I work for a small art gallery in Pune. Nothing fancy like this'mostly local artists. I took a week off to come for the exhibition." Bani replied.
The waiter left their order and went.
Bani screwed her face as she looked at his black coffee, "How can you drink that without anything?"
Jai laughed and pointed at her cream laden cup, "How can you spoil the taste of the coffee with all that junk?"
"It's divine'just like the cake'I love chocolate. Want to try?" Bani pushed the plate towards him.
Jai shook his head, "No thanks'I hate chocolate. Plus all that sugar it's bad for you."
Bani licked the spoon and grinned, "You only die once Jai'might as well enjoy all this sinful goodies before you go."
Jai watched as pink tongue lick her lips with enjoyment. He was fascinated by her. They talked casually for a while, Jai went through two more cups of black coffee. Bani savoured her chocolate creation slowly.
After some time, Jai looked at his watch. "I have to leave Bani. Got to run some errands. It was nice meeting you."
Bani took out a pad and wrote her name, the hotel where she was staying and her cell phone number. She tore it and held it out to him, "If you want to get in touch with me'I would happy to hear from you." Jai took the paper and tucked it in his shorts pocket. "Thanks. "
Bani held her cell phone up and took a snap with the camera mode and smiled at him. "One for my keep. Who knows'when we might see each other again."
Jai put his cap on. "You never know Bani. Have a great stay in Mumbai."
Bani sat and watched him walk off. She liked how he looked, tall, with broad shoulders, muscular legs and body, but she liked his jet black hair, casually styled and the matching black eyes.
Later Jai sat in his room studying the layout of the museum, including the video on playing on his laptop, provided by the mystery buyer. The video showed the security features in the building, including cameras, the guards and the surveillance room. Jai knew it wasn't going to be easy to break into the museum, if he was to steal the painting than it had to be done during daylight'during the time the museum was open. He sat and thought of ways to do it. He needed to think of something'something that would be work, be quick and easy too.
The piece of paper with Bani's detail fell out of his pocket as he emptied them at night. He smiled and tucked it away in a drawer. He fell asleep quickly, but he dreamt'he dreamt of Bani'meeting her in various places'her face smiling at him.
Couple of days later, Jai put on a dress pant and a casual shirt. He gelled his hair back neatly and perched the fake glasses on. He looked at himself. The fake moustache that he had added did change is face somewhat. He picked up the briefcase and walked out of the apartment.
Once again he walked into the museum. This time he went up a floor and walked around. After some time he went into the bathroom. In one of the stall he pulled out a newspapers dumped them on the floor. He lit a cigarette, broke it in half and then lit it. When it was smoking, he dropped it on the paper and watched it smoulder. He exited the stall and quickly came out and went downt he stairs. He had about couple of minutes to reach the mogul gallery before the alarm would go off, and then one minute to do the switch of the painting and leave before the museum locked out.
As he walked into the room, he made his way towards the painting of mumtaz. He looked at his watch and then counted slowly, 20, 10, 18'right on the dot the alarm went off and people started screaming and running. He gave five seconds for the camera to be turned off'his mystery had arranged for this to be done for him. He had a minute to do his job before the camera came on again. Quickly Jai lifted the painting off and swiftly opened the back and took out the canvas. Rolling it up, he put it in his briefcase, unrolling the fake and placing it in the frame. He had just put the frame back on and picked up his bag when a guard ran in, "Oye'what are you doing still in here'can't you hear the alarm bell. Jai pretended not to hear. The guard walked up angrily and gripped his arm and yelled. The guard turned Jai around. Jai pretended to be deaf. He made some horrible garble sounds. The guard glared at him, "Idiot'he is deaf. No wonder he is still standing here."
The guard pointed at the doors and screamed, "Leave'now. Fire in the building."
Jai pretended that he understood and went scrambling towards the door with the guard following him. Outside a crowd had gathered, Jai went into the crowd and then pushed his way out and took a taxi. He sat back relaxed in the taxi, wiping the sweat that had built up on his brow. The grip on the briefcase eased. Behind him another taxi was following him, Jai failed to see it.
When he reached home, Jai took out the painting and took a quick look at it before, rolling it up and putting it in a special container. He placed the container in the back of his wardrobe among his other stuff.
That evening he sat in his balcony savouring a glass of scotch. He had ordered a special meal and eat with relish, celebrating the success of his job alone. Now sipping his scotch, his mind wandered towards Bani. He had been dreaming every night about her since their meeting. He wondered what she was doing. He got up and took out the paper with her number and dialed it. After couple of ring he heard her voice.
"HI Bani. It's Jai'remember we met at the museum."
He heard her tinkling laughter. "I thought you had forgotten me Jai. How are you?"
"Fine. Say do you want to come over to my house for dinner tomorrow night'say around seven."
There was a pause at the other end, then Bani said, "Sure'I would love to. I might just be a little late. As I have an meeting with someone around six."
"That's fine. I shall be waiting for you. Goodnight." Jai cut the call off.
That night Jai dreamt of making love to Bani.

Jai opened the door to see Bani standing there with a bottle of wine. "Hi!" she said brightly, reaching up and pecking his cheek.
"Hi." He said and took the wine bottle she held out. "You look gorgeous," he said while staring openly at her. Bani was wearing a white sundress with light embroidery around the scoop neckline and short sleeve. Her tan skin was set off perfectly by the dress.
"Thanks." Bani walked in behind him, looking at the cluttered room. Jai pointed at the lumpy couch. "You can sit down while I pour this out in glasses for us."
Bani sat down on the couch and her eye fell on the books on art on the coffee table. She picked one up and started to flip through. Jai came back with two glasses of wine, he handed one to her.
Bani raised it up, "Here to the evening Jai." Jai clinked it with hers and took a sip. He sat down next to her and watched her look through the book, commenting now and then on a page. Her liked her slender neck, the perfectly sized ears, which had long dangling earrings on. Her hair had been plaited in a French braid'a pity he thought, it would be nice to run his fingers through the silky sheath. As if becoming aware of his gaze, Bani turned and arched her brow in question.
Jai smiled, "Nothing'just admiring a perfect picture in front of me." Bani blushed and took a gulp from the wine glass. Immediately she felt a warm rush in her stomach. Jai set his glass down and ran his finger down her arm, "I have been thinking about you a lot'in fact'you have been invading my sleep every night." His voice was low and sensuous'Bani felt her stomach turn. Those black eyes that she liked, were gleaming black and had a sensuous gaze in it. Jai leaned over and placed her glass on the table. He gently tugged her so that she fell lightly on his chest. With ease he titled her face up and brushed his rather dry lips on hers. He felt her shiver and her fingers grip his shoulder. Jai kissed her little harder and evoked a response from her. Within few seconds they were kissing passionately.
When he finally let go of her, both of them took deep drags of breath. Jai cleared his throat loudly. "I think we should eat dinner, what do you say'before that wine gets to our head too much."
Bani laughed soflty, "Is that what you are trying to put it down to'I thought you kissed me because you wanted too."
Jai gave a bashful look. "Well'I did. But I don't want things to go elsewhere for now."
"So cute." Bani said as she followed him. The small table in kitchen was already set out for two settings. Bani sat down as Jai served her grilled chicken, rice and vegetable sabzi with salad at the side. He poured some more wine out for them. They ate while talking about various artists they liked. When they finished eating the bottle wine had been consumed and Jai had opened another one. Bani helped him clear up and then both of them went back to the room.
Bani did not know whether it was the wine or Jai's pleasant company, but both them were soon kissing each other with passion. When Jai carried her to the bed, Bani did not protest, for her it seemed something that was bound to happen between the two of them.
Bani lay awake next to Jai'listening to his gentle snoring. She felt her body still tingling with their passionate lovemaking. The way his lips and hands had roved over her, gave her goosebumps thinking about it. After sometime when she was sure he was fast asleep, she slipped out of bed and put on her discarded clothes. With smooth and silent grace she searched his room looking for the Mumtaz's painting that she had seen him steal from the museum. It was her luck that he had not seen her as she had been near a door surrounded by others. But when the alarm went off, she had turned and stood waiting for others in front of her to move. She had not panicked and pushed like the others. It was just as she left the room and then decided to turn around, she had seen take the painting off. She had been rooted to the spot, until she had heard the guard shout at her, and she had fled.
When she discovered the round cylinder in the back of the wardrobe, she pulled it out noiselessly, opened and made sure it held the painting. With a satisfied smile, she exited the apartment with the cylinder.

Jai woke in the morning disappointed at not finding Bani in bed. He stretched luxuriously thinking about the feel of her last night as she lay beneath him. Well he had not expected her to stay, most of the time such casual affair ended with either him leaving or the girl leaving while the other was asleep. He got up lazily and showered. There was nothing much to do'except wait for the call from his buyer.
Two days later, the phone rang furiously in Jai's apartment. Jai unlocked the door quickly and ran for the phone. 'Hi!" He said breathlessly. Jai listened intently, his face paled and then he slammed the phone down and turned on the TV'there on all the news channel was the story of the stolen Mumtaz painting. He rushed into the room and looked for the cylinder in the wardrobe but it was not there. Stuck to the door of the wardrobe was a note, it just said "Sorry!" Jai ripped it off angrily and threw it away. How could she have fooled him? Why didn't he sense anything wrong with her?
Jai sat and listened to the news caster saying something about the original being returned anonymously with some bullshit story of having been discovered somewhere on the street. Jai ran his hands through his hair'he had just lost the chance to make some decent money'enough for him to take a long break away from this game. All his plans ruined by Bani. Suddenly he laughed as a thought occurred to him. May be she was a lot smarter than she looked. May be she was hired by someone to privately guard the collection'he had not seen her that day at the museum'but there was nothing to say she wasn't there. He was tempted to pick up the phone and call her, but he did not. He will wait and see what happened.
Jai returned the amount advanced to him by the client with an apology. He did not want to keep the money, which to him now seemed dirty. And he did not attempt to go back to the museum to see the painting again'though the urge was strong in him.
A couple of weeks passed and Jai just tried to forget about Bani, which was proving to impossible. The woman had just managed to dig her nails into his skin. Those dreams of making love to her were intense as before, even though he had experienced the reality.
One day when he had been napping on the sofa, the door bell rang few times. Jai woke up groggily and went to open the door. There stood Bani with a bottle of wine in her hand and a smile on her face.
"Hi!" she said. Jai stood staring at her.
"Are you still mad?" she asked with a smile.
Jai couldn't help but smile, he shook his head.
"Can I come in?" she asked. Jai stepped aside to let her in. He did not take the bottle of wine from her, saying he had learnt a valuable lesson from last time. Bani smiled.
"Are you saying it was that bad'our lovemaking."
Jai coloured and stammered quickly, "No..ooo."
He paused, "You stole my painting." He accused.
Bani arched her shapely brow, "Yours? I thought it belongs to someone else."
Jai grimaced, "You knew I took it."
Bani nodded, "Yes, I saw you steal it. I bugged me'so I decided to steal it back and return it back to the museum. I hope you didn't mind."
Jai laughed, "I didn't, but my client is mad with me. And I lost a lot of money."
Bani laughed with him. Then she looked at him seriously, "Is it all about the money with you? Is that what you really do? Steal art pieces for this dirty buyers."
Jai nodded, "Well it's not really about the money...Just the thrill of holding the original piece in your hand. Just think of that painting'in your hands."
Bani shook her head. "It's still stealing'something which does not belong to you. It's heritage of the country too." With soft look she leaned over and ran and her hand down his face. "You know I am in love with you. I tried to fall out'calling you all sorts of name. Forcing myself to hate you'but it didn't work. What shall I do about it Dil Ka Chor?"
Her confession made him blush. He just stared at her with surprise, until the words sank in and then he reached over and pulled her into his arms. "I think it's you that has stolen my heart. I can't get you out of my system. What say you to getting married?"
Bani pulled back a little, "Do you promise to give this bad habit of yours?"
Jai nodded, "I will try."
Bani tugged at his shirt, "YOU will not try'you will do it. Then I will marry you."
Jai took her hands into his and kissed each of her fingers, "Ok'I will. Now'when do you want to get married? And do I have to wait to make you my wife before making love to you again?"
Bani pushed him down and hit him lightly on the chest. "Yes'I am going to make you wait'it's your punishment for stealing such a beautiful painting." Jai rolled his eyes and then pulling her on top of him and kissing her, "At least I should be allowed to kiss you." And then proceeded to do exactly that.
