ALKA YAGNIK

ALKA YAGNIK

Alka Yagnik, the once reigning queen of playback singing has become very selective and is rarely heard these days. When we asked her (during a press conference) as to why, she has become so choosy, the singer replied, ''I am saddened by the present day music scenario. Music is no longer melodious and music albums do not have a long shelf life.''

Recalling the super hit songs of SAAJAN and DHADKAN (by melody kings, Nadeem-Shravan), Alka said that present day composers do not compose songs like they used to be. In fact, the mentioned movies are evergreen and even after so many years, when she performs on stage she is always requested to sing songs from SAAJAN and DHADKAN repeatedly. And we are a witness to that, just a couple of days back!

Another reason for her doing less songs is the fact that her voice is sweet and her vocals soft while heroines like Bipasha Basu, Koena Mitra require more husky vocals. Alka says, ''I want to sing songs that are decent. Vulgarity puts me off. I do not want to sing songs that will make me feel ashamed.'' Alka also expressed her opinion on reality shows and choosing of winners via sms. Says Alka, ''Reality shows give a platform to new and hidden talents. They give exposure to these budding talents. But regionalism and emotions should not be the motivating factor for the people while choosing winners. They should choose winners only on the basis of merit and talent.''

Right on dot Alka, come back with a vengeance as we miss you!

I agree with her to the T, I hate the music and lyrics of todays era. The songs are hogwash, and not songs you could listen to over and over again. I still listen to the music of the 70's, 80's and 90's even today!
Miss the old melodies!!

I suppose it i agree partially, but it all depends on what your taste is any maybe to a certain extent your age range. For exmaple my mum hates todays music and prefers the old 60's, 70's and 80's music. I do beleive music is not the same anymore but bollywood do churn out good songs here and there!

Well, not all music is bad. We have composers like Rahman and lyricists like Prasoon joshi whose work is right up there. Also taste change from Generation to generation.

agree with the shrill voice part..

hmm yes choli ke peeche was also a vulgar song... but its not that there was a dominance of such songs in the 90's....

now the music industry is being taken over by :
western dance numbers
sufi songs
punjabi songs

which are all catchy i guess, but none of the songs are immortal...
and nowadays hype is enough to make a song a hit

agreed.. and not to forget Javed Akhtar has given us some great songs in the current era as well as Gulzar.. overall, it has gone down in quality but we do get some good numbers here and there.. as you said, not all music is bad...
however, i do prefer old numbers and in comparison, most of the old songs were likeable and still are remembered while few of the songs from the current era fall in the same category..
